Zona Zip Mark
i have seen them on most trials web sites and started to wonder what they are so could someone tell me what they are
MadManMike
It's a little bit of metal that holds a rear mech for gears or a tensioner for single speed - on 24 / 26" bikes.
chris H
You dont use them on mods. Its so you can put a tensioner onto the bike so it keeps the chain from comeing slack or have to much tension and snap.

MadManMike
But some 26" bikes don't use them, they use a different system.Yeah, depending on your dropouts... My DMR doesn't use one, it has Horizontal dropouts.
Alex Dark
vertical dropouts = has a gear hanger for mounting a rear mech or chain tensionerhorizontal dropouts = perfect chain tension hence no need for a tensioner
Chandler
I dont get why you have to have a tensioner on a vertical dropout. What happens if you try and run vertical drop out without a tensioner....Cant yo do this if you take out enough chain links it just might fit tight and be fine? max-t
I dont get why you have to have a tensioner on a vertical dropout. What happens if you try and run vertical drop out without a tensioner....Cant yo do this if you take out enough chain links it just might fit tight and be fine? With a vertical dropout the wheel is fixed into one place and cannot move, so obviously you need a tensioner to keep the chain taught. The margins of removing links to getting the perfect chain tension are not fine enough and will not work and provide sufficient tension. However, it has been known to work on some frames with certain chainstay lengths and gear ratios.Example:With horizontal dropouts you can use snail cams or chain tugs which use such fine adjustment, so it is easy to get the perfect tension. Endohopper
I guess it was a waste of time that so many of us took the time to write detailled WiKi articles .
Chandler
Max-T - thanks for explaining clearly I think its worth experimenting so you can run single speed without a tensioner, even if the chain is a tiny bit loose. With a bit of luck it may be ok. I think its a bit idle for people with vertical dropouts to assume that they need tensioners before trying without. Chains arent expensive after all.Others -Common sense would show that Im asking in new members chat because surprisingly enough, no I do not magically know the answer to my question. Especially considering I am NEW to trials.I guess theres always some patronizing ass who wants to have a dig....despite the fact that wiki articles are only brief and do not explain everything. The solution would be to get a Horizontal Dropout frame... They are so much less hassle.

They are so much less hassle.Yeah I have vertical drop outs (and a tensioner) but not the money for another frame! However I have the money for another chain, so then I can just take enough links out and try it out. Might do that when I have some time. Ill post on here when I try. I defo think its worth doing even if a tiny bit loose. My actual tensioner needs adjusting every week anyway, so the end half of every week the chains always a tiny bit loose as it is!p.s. whats annoying to me is people that dont actually read the links they post. To those concerned, if you actually read the wiki link ull find it doesnt say anything about running single speed on a vertical dropout, without a tensioner, which is what I am on about. Thanks for coming.
