Mark W
Looks at Ad Read Basically, I need someone to weigh a Tesco carrier bag, a Sainsburys carrier bag or a Morrisons/Somerfield carrier bag. Weight needs to be as accurate as possible, so tech digital scales would be awesome.First person to reply with the answer wins

Revolver
Sainsbury's new ones, the orange ones, are SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT.In GCSE we did a project for heavy duty ones vs. standard bags, somehow the standard bags were better.
Mark W
Why ?For my photography course we've got to do a series of billboard campaigns. Our's is based around the amount of carrier bag usage in the UK, e.g. how we use 10,000,000,000 carrier bags per year in the UK, how people use 31 carrier bags for every second of every day of every week of every month throughout the year, etc. - so we're trying to find ways of making these numbers easier to visualise for people, in that if you said "We use 10bn carrier bags a year", that's life "WTF?", but if you try and put it across in terms of stuff people can comprehend better, it gets the point across better. I want to know how much tonnage that is per year so I can think of ways of comparing it to something else.If every carrier bag used in the UK was laid end to end, you'd be able to circumnavigate the globe 12.5 times
JT!
I think it's best to weigh a batch of them. Ours at work come in 150 i think, weigh one of them and do the math.

Mark W
Yeah I know, but that's why I thought someone with a good set of digital scales - e.g. TB - would be able to just weigh one on it's own.
AdamR28
Will see what I can wort out for you tomorrow Mark... ours are only accurate to 1g though... If I can find a few I'll weigh them and then divide
Mark W
It shooooould be between 6g and 10g, most places seems to quote either 6, 8 or 10g anyway...
AdamR28
Ah beast, didn't realise they were that heavy!! Got an Asda one here (just been ) and I'm sure I can find a Tesco and a Sainos at work... will that do?
Mark W
If the Asda one is roughly the same size, that'd be fine.Assuming a carrier bag weighs 8g, people in the UK use the equivalent of 2.6 double decker buses a day of carrier bags
tomturd
Morrisons: 8.82gSomerfield Normal but likely to split and cause embarrasing situations: 5.70gSomerfield Heavier Weight: 7.67gTesco: 9.41g

tomturd
Nice...Has anyone else noticed Tecso bags have got thinner recently? Are you weighing old or new Tom? Erm, they seem quite thick, although not as thick as the morrisons or somerfield heavier duty ones. I got them about a week ago I guess, but as Tesco's is 30 mins drive from me I don't go there very often so I couldn't say if they're the new thinner type 2 and a half double deckers is a shitload of carrier bags though, to be fair Tis indeed. I like the idea of paper bags like in Ireland. There was mention of a 'plastic bag tax' in this years budget but I didn't hear anything about it in the end. JT!
2 and a half double deckers is a shitload of carrier bags though, to be fair Well, to think we get through 1 and a half boxes of bags in our small 4 ile shop a week.Looking at about 80 boxes a year. That's probably more the sise of a small car from our shop alone. And there's thousands of small shops all over the uk, let alone the big supermarkets.
