Besides, removing a booster only generally works for instant performance increase on ground rims. For a smooth one it'll work just as well, only the pad will compress more, which may or may not make the brake feel spongier depending on the frame and booster. I'd say for a smooth rim the stiffer the better to be honest, although trying it without just to be sure can't hurt.

I use echo old pads on smooth rim on my echo lite. I have echo control booster. I use tar too. But my brake is really shit. My magura is properly bleeded I'm sure. I think it could be beacause the pads are very old - many people have rode them before and they have only 2mm material left. I think to go for a grind soon.
