Was sat here watching the news earlier and saw loads of mentions of serial killers and rapes etc, then one of a vigilante killing a proven rapist who was released early from jail and began re-offending.

Just began wondering really about the mindset behind both characters and the differences that set them aside. As far as i can tell a vigilante is someone who is willing to kill someone else in order to deliver them to justice. A vigilante has the perk of being portrayed as the hero, but all the risks of being caught by the police. The serial killer kills because they enjoy it, they are usually in a mindset that isn't concerned about being caught because that's where their fame is produced, in people knowing its them.

So a more realistic scenario that basically stems down to superhero or supervillian... which would you be and why?

Vigilante, i'd kill all serial killers =] with poison because i couldn't do with trying to explain to my mum why i came home 5 nights in a row covered in blood and poison is less traceable from what i have learned from watching CSI

So you'd be able to live with the thought of having killed another human being so long as its "for the greater good"?

It depends. If someone smacked a hammer in the side of my dads head and killed him...Two weeks later they still havn't caught the geezer who'd done it and i see him...I'd smash a hammer in the side of his head and yes...I'd admit everything in court and do the time for it, would feel 100 times better in myself.

Hmm, i don't know whether that counts though. I agree completely that its an attempt to rectify injustice, but i personally think it sways more on the side of revenge, where as i imagine a vigilante as being more impartial with personal feelings towards the perpetrator. Its also only one act, which again moves it closer to being revenge more than a vigilante belief.

no one watch dexter then?

No, i remember seeing the adverts for it, just never watched it. Any good?

Are we not talking about Dexter's Lab?

:)

'Cause it goes without saying that i watch that!

But yeah, I'd be a vigilante.

No, we're talking about the tv-series called dexter. Its about a serial killer/cop type thing and its not a cartoon for kids.

Vigilante

Because atleast you think your doing right....

Better than killing for the hell of it i suppose

Most serial killers thought they were doing good (and I mean, had an honest conviction that they were doing right). Hence why many serial killers murdered young girls like Ed Gein or Jack the Ripper, the latter believing he was removing a plight from London's streets by killing 'unfortunates,' young girls who were so poor they had no option but to sell themselves through prostitution. David Berkowitz, AKA Son of Sam, was convinced that he was programmed to kill by his neighbours dog which was possessed by a demon, and in fact wrote a letter to the police commanding them to shoot him on sight so as to stop his blood rampage, which he could not stop himself.

Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy, I'll give you, those guys were just f**king psychotic.

But I'd still be a serial killer, the rage appeals to me so much more than the morality.

i think i'd be a vigilante. i'd find it hard to justify killing anyone, but if i "had to choose", doing it in the name of (or be it without the condonement (is that a word of) justice appeals more than 'just for kicks' or because i'm mental and think killing prostitutes is doing society a service. that said, i could be mental and THINK i was being a vigilante for the cause of justice...ooh it's a minefield.

on another note -

I'd be a vigilante, a bit like The Boondock Saints

this is one of my favourite films of all time. i hardly know anyone who's even seen it, let alone likes it! 3 people in one thread, that's just too much!

Lets team up I can put on an irish voice.

shame norman reedus couldn't....
