hi ive got a new set of cranks comming down so i want to order a new freewheel, i would like to know whether to order the new try-all 108.9 ( picture shown silver ) with the spot welds or to order the traditional 108.9 ( black one no spot welds ) has anyone had a chance to try out the new one or would you just reccomend one of the two please, i have had a black one and they are class but i have seen a few been teared apart ( jersey chris is on his 3rd ) so what do you think will be better

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the lockring on the out-board side of the cranks too, meaning that to come undone it'd have to physically un-wind the freewheel from the threads too? I don't get why they've done that at all :S Made sense on the ACS Claws, but not on these, especially as these are 4x the price so you'd probably wanna get in there at some point to give it a thorough clean? I know a GT-85 spray-through works pretty well, but even so...

The try-all freewheels did have a problem with the lockring coming loose, and they were a b*****d to get to to tighten up again.

The only problem with the spot welds, as has already been mentioned, is that you wouldn't be able to take it apart and service it.

Saying that Tank had a dead ACS that was welded up, but a bit of wd40 squirted inside and it sorted itself out.

as you say, even though ist welded you can not get spare parts for them to repair anyway

Yep - got a Monty on at the moment but will be fitting one when I build my new frame up (arrived today :D )

how do you afford to live with all your bikes ( too much money :giggle: ) you should be in a ferrai next year

  • 3 weeks later...

i have been running the silver welded try-all for 5/6 mkonths and i has NEVER skipped EVER! Without a doubt the best freewheel i have had. No need to take it apart really just spray and blow through with an airline.

Sounds the nuts too

I'd rather have to move my cranks less than a degree more, but have way, way better reliability, personally. The 96-click Tensile was pushing it in terms of getting consistent, reliable engagement, so why bother risking your own safety just to have a few more clicks? I'm sure if Try-All could've done it, they would've done by now.

I think that was the idea, but if the face of the freewheel with the lockring on was right up against the crank or bashring, the outer part would rub as it went round, hence there being a gap.
