Laptop Keeps Turning Off After Playing Melody...

Right, i understand the melody is meant to mean something, but it is seriously about 8 or 9 beeps which form a melody, with different timings and tones for certain beeps.

I of course can't translate this into text, but any ideas?

It seems to be doing after random periods of time, could be hours, days, and only thing i can think of is heat maybe? Fan still works, although its always been a stupidly hot laptop. It is also really quite old, well, 16-18 months old, so maybe its just had its day?

Anything i can do to try and sort it or diagnose it without somehow recording the melody, which of course is random so i'll never know when it happens?

Secondly, anyway if it does die all together that i could get the data of the hard drive, like, is their laptop hard drive to usb enclosures or some shit? Or is it a case of buying an external hard drive and just transferring what i need over?

It does sound like overheating, yes. If it's old, take it apart and clean all the dust out of it, or use a can of compressed air or something.

Well, assuming that the hard drive is not the cause of your problems (!) - Yes, it should be possible. You can get USB to IDE and USB to SATA connectors, or you can buy an external hard drive enclosure for laptop drives. So there are ways. But it sounds like you should probably back things up now anyway though.

There should be a little hatch over where the fan/cooler is. Open it up and clear out all the fluff. Mine used to fill up really quickly.

And to get your stuff off, you can remove the hard drive, get a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adapter and plug it into a desktop PC - heres one for 73p delivered - http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.727

Anything to do with your battery? If it's actually hot to touch it's most likely overheating.

I have a USB to IDE thing that came with a power supply to allow me to use both 3.5 and 2.5 HDD's, As far as I know for laptop drives you wouldn't need the power cable. I might have two usb cable's cos the first time I bought it the power supply broke, sent it back alone, and got sent a full pack again. I'll have a look around and see if I have it if you want??

EDIT:

This is what I have except mine hasn't got SATA on it, just 2.5 and 3.5 : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-in-1-USB-2-0-To-SA...1QQcmdZViewItem
