Isn't the volume a result of the grease inside it?

Yeah it can be, as in the case of the Monty and Viz freewhells - there identical, apart from the Viz being silent, and the Monty being very loud! All a result of more or thicker lube/greece in the Viz.

I took my Tensile apart and just cleaned all the grease out, and reassembled with WD40, it's super loud now.

Not too great of an idea, theres going to be no lube in there at all now so the things running dry which means it'll wear out quicker.

I hoped it would leave a fair bit in, but it's lasted a year already and a new one is only £35, bargin!

Apparently WD40 contains 15+% of Mineral Oil, I think that's why you wouldn't clean your rims with it. But still, if you use enough WD40 then it should be fairly effective as a lubricant.

I think chris means that with a Tensile being unsealed, after a few months all the WD could have drained/evapourated out so it would be effectively dry.
