Guitars!

Alright all, After borowing my uni mates old guitar since he has his new one, I have decided to get my own set up, after really enjoying it!

I would like something of the Les Paul styling variety, as after playing his, it was just comfy to sit and play, unlike some of the others I have seen, also has quite a nice sound when played unplugged I thought.

A quick search bought up the Epiphone Les Paul Special 100, Would this be a good sort of guitar to begin with? As I said I loved the size and sound of my friends which I think is Gibson, which I have read is a little heavier? I'm aware I'll be in need of an amp etc, but I'm willing to spend upto about £200 on a first set up. I'm just after opinions an thoughts on guitars for beginers and ideas of other guitars to be looking out for!

As I said, The folowing are a must;

-Comfort, I like to play seated, so something like a Baby Z or Flying V wont go down well with me, plus I love the styling of the Les Pauls, look awsome,

-Sound when played unplugged, I realise it will never sound as chrisp as when ran through an amp, but I like to just pick up and have a quick play,

-Budget of about 140-150 MAX on the actual guitar, remember its going to be m first, so its not to crutial on spec, just as long as it will keep me happy for a year or so until I can afford a better guitar :)

Taa.

You find a Les Paul comfortable?! I've got a Strat but I have always secretly wanted a Les Paul. But I played one the other day and it was really uncomfortable. It's at least twice the weight of my strat, and the top edge is really sharp and digs into your ribs. Awesome sound though.

It might be worth trying to find something second hand. Either an Epiphone les paul standard (The rrp is £270 ish) or a Mexican Strat if that's what you're into (rrp £350 ish). Epiphone make cheap, and super cheap guitars. The one you linked to is the latter and not great (although perfectly adequate to learn on). But the more expensive ones are almost indistinguishable from the Gibson ones.

P.S. Also if you're interested in Strats, then the Squier ones are OK. You can get starter packs for £150 ish with guitar + lead + amp which will certainly get you started. The only thing I will say is that decent guitars hold their value really well. If you bought a second hand Gibson Les Paul today, you could sell it in 5 years for the same amount.

Your not wrong about them holding value! Just checked the bay of all things good, theres some '94 gibson LP's for there origional value, it's unreal! Thanks for the advice thou, it'll certainly come in handy. I'm off to my local music store on tuesday to see what they have in an to try out a few more styles, see which I find the most comfy to play.

I'm hoping they will do an equally good deal for me as a few I know who have been in, my friend brought his Gibson SG an got the equivilant of nearly £150 worth of gear with it for nothing! Such a good store. Anyway keep the suggestions comming guys.... All 6 of us that are onlline at 2.40 AM.......

I think in gibsons/epiphones, the standard ones are better than the special ones.

Seeing as you're in notts, check out the Music Inn on alfreton road, its got loads of guitars and loads of amps. They have some very nice guitars there (Y)

For your price, epiphone are the range you want. I assure you, though, as you progress you'll definately want a better amp and guitar.

For your amp, to stick to around £200 total, you might want to look at a Marshall MG10CD. It's only 10w, and the overdrive function is mediocre, and I guarantee it will go wrong at least once when you've had it for a year. However, its a good starter amp. You could also have a look at Roland cube amps.

When you have more money to spend on the amp, from what I understand of your guitar choice, I'd recommend a Vox AD30VT, but that's for later...

Anyway, play the amps and play the guitars, its your choice so make it a good one not a quick one.

the only thing thats going to sound remotely good around that price range is going to be a epiphone , when picking a ephiphone check the spec of it i wouldnt purchase one unless it had a set neck and the covered pickups .

epiphone les paul if you have your heart set on a lespaul you have to realise that there extremely heavy but you get some amazing sustain from the woods that they use , stay away from anything that says squire ! allthough there cheap and include a amp there terrible guitars they have cheap ass single coils pickups that dont realy pick up the sound clear and they humm all the time .

also check out the ltd version of esp guitars some of those are quite cheap and come with ducan design and emg active pickups (Y)

good luck
