Whats The Beef With Other Bikers?

A bit OT, but it's strange how the riding style you choose depends on what character you have.

I've got a mate who was studying sociology, he did an in depth analysis of what various groups of riders represent and this is roughly what he came up with - this was a few years ago so I could have got some things wrong. Found it quite interesting, but if you feel offended by this or disagree please remember it's not my opinion :)

-XC riders are usually well off, over 24 years old, quite well educated, don't do drugs and rarely get really drunk

-DH/FR riders are usually around 15-22 years old, want to get a good education, don't do drugs but like getting drunk, fond of clubbing. Parents are usually well off.

-BMX riders - usually 17 and over, drugs aren't uncommon, they go to clubs with specific music (minimal techno is common amongst local riders), don't think much about their future

-Trials riders - majority over 19, don't do drugs, don't drink much, aren't crazy about clubbing, concerned about their future, not too well off.

The majority of local riders I know fit into this description.

It may well be different in Poland though?

I find there are comp, ignorant and arrogant dicks in each sport. I find when riding bmx you get branded a certain rider because of your bike setup. When riding trials it does seem the same way. But as it goes bmxers piss me off more no matter what bike i'm on and it's a rare occasion when i go to a park and manage to get a friendly session on with a stranger these days.

Haha as a BMXer i honestly think thats semi accurate  Obviously i wouldn't describe myself like that and the generalisations are pretty extreme but its that kind of slant i reckon. It's not saying everyone in each class is like that but i definately reckon from forums and stuff that trials riders do drugs and shit less, seem better educated, older/more mature etc

Parks are completely different though, to be fair. Street riders seems to be a LOT different to park riders, and a lot more accepting of people, hence me never riding skateparks usually 'cos I can't be bothered dealing with them :P

For my opinion on the subject, read pretty much everything Bongo wrote.

The only addition I'd make is that no way is the average trials rider over 19, by any stretch.

I've met just as many dick heads in trials as I have in BMX to be honest, quite a few of the better BMXers around here used to ride trials, they were good at it too, but just got bored and started to ride other things.

I've noticed that quite a few people stop riding trials when they get cars... 'cause they can just razz off to a park and stay there all day rather than trekking to a spot to do one thing then riding to another spot and doing one thing etc etc

The only problems i've ever had are with DH/DJ riders, they really are elitist and think they're so much better than everyone else, but thats just the ones i've met... there might be nice ones... that steve peat seemed a nice fella when I talked to him at the bike show a few years back.

I ride BMX now 'cause I just gave up on my forever dieing trials bike and I've noticed how much easier it is to just go out and have a quick ride. Like when you've got a spare hour or 2 you can just grab it, roll to the nearest bit of flat ground and try foot jam tail whips or something, whereas with trials you have to at least have some pallets or a wall or something to be satisfied with riding.

The BMXers are pretty accepting around here though to be honest, obviously they give everyone a bit of banter but you just have to give it back and have a laugh about it and stuff rather than getting all uppy about it, they only really give people shit when they full on ride in the way and just completely disrupt the flow of the whole park...

Fruit booters are definitely the most hated of the lot though 'cause they cut everyone up and just generally do their own thing without thinking about what anyone else is doing or anyones safety.

Unless you're really good though, even me as a trials rider thinks that the general 'look' of trials is a bit gay. That's not meant as a cocky insult either i genuinly cringe when i think how i looked as a trials rider back in the day lol.

All that hopping about which is the control of the sport, now shows itself to me as a lack of control. It just doesn't look cool like bmx!

Dunno about the rest, but the trials rider one seems a bit inaccurate, ill bet 40% smoke weed, and ill bet 70% love to get pissed

all the riders i know, LOVE a good night out

I'm sure it varies depending on nationality. It certainly doesn't seem accurate if you compare it to people on this forum. I don't fit into that description either, but that's roughly how things look like this end.

Even though I am sat in a skate shop, selling rollerblades, and I've been skating for most of my life, I agree and disagree with this statement. I find lots of rollerbladers are arrogant wankers, who think they own the park, but then i find at most parks I go to, BMXers are the same, rarely have I been allowed to drop into a ramp, or skate a line, by a BMXer, but then again, I've also rarely been allowed by other rollerbladers to do it either, because they're all out to boost their tiny little egos by being able to skate "better" than you, even though their tricks look like shit.

Probly with that is, in most cases bmxers do "own the park" theres usually

alot of them

there usually huge, and will kick ur face in.

get in the way of a bmx hurtling at you on a skateboard/skates your gonna get hurt.

oh and i also think fruit booters are arogant f**kers who dress too stupid, even for me :S

That's not a good reason to act like a willy though, is it? Just because they're bigger than you or take up more room?

Infact it's that attitude that I hate, "we're bigger than you so we can run the park", how about, f**k off and let other people enjoy themselves too.

"Fruitbooters" dress stupid in which way? I wear skate clothes most of the time, usually it's jeans, quite tight but not skintight like I used to, and a tight teeshirt, it's hardly groundbreaking shit, at least I'm not skating around in a f**king superman t-shirt, grow up.

Also, ALL the BMXers round here dress the same, tight jeans that are too short (eg, sit below the hips, but have turn ups so they sit above the ankles) all wear stupidly tight shirts, and a generic Topman jumper, with HUGE skate/clown shoes. They look like f**king retarded clones.

So heres some pics of some skaters, who are currently well known pros in the industry

Notice how none of them are wearing huge clothes or massive shirts.

Skating baggy was cool about 3/4 years ago, now being tight is considered cool.

Oh and RE: Your sig, it's spelt "lose".

I've gotta agree with Dave here, all the booters I see are almost always wearing some ridiculous XXXL shit. Same with the skaters though largely, ultra tight jeans, massive T-shirts, what?

Using skateparks as a way of judging any category of people is a pretty bad idea though, to be fair. It's the same way that I met a bunch of arrogant, dickhead-type people at trials comps. It's just what seems to happen when you get people like that into any kind of specialist area I guess. Like on street, everyone seems to be cool, maybe it's because if you're riding street you all kind of know you're not meant to be there, and so there's a sort of equal level of respect? Whereas at comps/parks, you know it's your place so people tend to obssess over them a bit more. Either way, the majority of skaters/booters I've met at parks have been complete tools. My old sessions at Newport (In fact, every time I go...) are characterised by fruitbooters constantly doing idiotic shit like using the jumpbox as a roll-in to try and flip into the box, sitting on the funbox with their minging girlfriends, sitting in the way of the spine, etc.

But yeah, as I said, I never really judge anyone at parks too harshly. I expect them to be complete c**ts, so when you get the odd few people who are there simply because they love riding, and love riding with other people, it always seems that bit better.

EDIT: I'd just like to take this opportunity to throw a massive "f**k you!" to all the dickheads who come down to Southbank on their full sus rigs, full team jerseys, snake the f**k out of everybody, drop the 7-set amazing badly using every inch of travel they own, have a go at BMXers (some full sus dude was down, carrying a big Camelbak bag, asked me if I had an 8mm allen key on me 'cos his rear linakge was loose, then had a go at me when I said "no", and asked me why I didn't carry tools with me... eh?), then just leave. Why do you bother? There are a couple of semi-regular street riders on front-sus rigs who work at the local Evans who are all sound as f**k and there's a lot of mutual respect, but then you get the weekend warrior street dudes who just turn up, get in the way, snake people and just generally act ridiculously annoyingly. Some guy rode past me on his comedy looking 'dirt jump for street' bike and had a go at me for the size of my bars on my way home, then turned up at Southbank the next day, did some 1ft high bow-legged turnbars, got totally dominated by everyone else there and said nothing. Irony: noted.

All the bmxers around my area all wear skate/Primark stuff. Regarding owning the park. What i seem to see is when were riding something, other people come up (i.e booters, skaters etc) start skating or whatever (which is fair enough) But then complain if they get snaked when we were riding there first. Fashion wise, Booters 'round here here all wear skinny jeans boxers that look like they're trying to keep there abs warm with, and tight t shirts. Bmxers are the worse for being arrogant cocks though from what i've seen (unless your riding streets) You can't ride another park without someone trying to shut you down, they only speak to the other locals and they will take the piss out of any new comer there. I was always friendly at my local park along with my friends, but now i'm more of a 'not ignorant, but not friendly' type person. If someone speaks to me i'll speak back, and be friendly. Cos you also get people that come from other places and try to shut you down. (Which very rarely happens on your own turf. But they try.)

I'm with John here. Fruitbooters in rampworx at least don't do the baggy clothes on the whole anymore. There are still a few, but most follow the emo girls jeans route these days. There are a group from manchester that often come thoguh and they still are baggied up to death.

I think rampworx might be the odd one out here, but everyone gets on, bmxers skaters and bladers all know each other and it's really good. I was going out with a skater for a couple of years and it kind of got bmxers and bladers together in rampworx becasue all my mates go to know her mates and then everyone knew everyone.

People have personalities before they have sports, so it's cool to allow them to demonstrate their personality before you judge them just becasue of what they do.

Hahahaha point noted. Where you ever there when that 'extreme' running group in tight black sas style iniforms or something kept running around southbank jumping stuff and getting in the way? So all the locals were just standing in there way and tripping them up and stuff?

To be honest though i've very rarely encountered any beef with any one doing extreme sports other then a few skaters at southbank who are on a bit of an ego trip. I get on with all the local skaters round here and the booters (although i do think they're a bit wierd) and the mountain bikers especially (although point noted a few downhillers seem to be posh daddies rich boy and think they're better then you). I honestly think i've never had any beef just because when i arrive at a new park or whatever one of the first things i do is approach locals and say hi, and also say hi when they come to my local parks, whatever they are. Once you've done that it's pretty hard for anyone to be a dick to you whereas before you do that or if you don't speak to them theres kinda a tension that hangs in the air sometimes.

i really hate the way bmx'ers and skaters are twats to us. Really really offensive and petty (N)

whilst riding a single block, had one cocky bmxer just ride straight towards me (i didn't move, i was trackstanding) try and grind and completly fall off and start ranting at me... Had absolutly no idea why he thought he could have a go

Downhillers tend to be friendly just talk shit hahaha but nice guys (Y)

Dirt jumpers seem pretty damn sound and down to earth

but yeah just bmxer's and skaters

But you get the opposites for all of them, some bmxers are sound as hell
