Stoke-on-trent

HI.

So I went to the Stoke Campus today for Staffordshire University. I didn't get a chance to visit the town centre, so I was wondering if anyone on the forum is from Stoke?

What's the town centre like? What supermarkets/shops are there?? I got told the town centre is roughly about a 10-15 minute walk from the Campus..

Is Stoke a nice place to study? Anyoneeeeeeeeeeeeee knowww???

Many thanks,

Benny :)

I personally think the town centre (Hanley) is nice aslong as it isn't raining as there's lots of windows to browse, shops wise there's pretty much everything in the potteries shopping centre (clothe, phone/gadgets and jewelery shops galore) as for supermarkets there's an Icelands near the bus station...Somebody from here will have to go into mroe detail as I'm knackered. But other than that mate I say it's a nice place aslong as you keep your wits about you at night lol. You will probably see me and a friend down there at night sometimes checking out what birds are about and stuff lol. Hope I've helped somehow

Im at staff uni ( stoke campus) hanleys ok for shopping, stoke is awful, so run down, the whole area is very poor and full of chavs. however the unis orite and accomodation is good.

Its a rough area but then again so are most places these days. Im happy here if that counts. quite a good night out in hanley too. and ill have my bike here next year so be happy to come out riding (Y)

Hanley town centre is a nice area, plenty of shops/cafe's and stuff to chill at.

there's a bus service right next to the Stoke campus as well, the number 25 bus i think it is, which will take you straight to the town centre, even though it is only a short walk.

Sugar Mill club nights are fair good as well if you wanna go out at night, they've got a main room with all club music on, a 2nd room with more rock type stuff and they've got a heated roof terrace if you want to smoke and stuff.

there's also free bar fridays at the local gay club lol, £10 entry then free bar all night, so as long as your not homophobic then its a good place to go lol

the surrounding areas are proper shit holes though, full of chavs and the like, but as long as you keep your eyes people and avoid dodgy areas at night its fineee

I'm going to Staffs uni in September hopefully :)

hope this helps you out (Y)

Thanks, yeah the Uni seemed quite nice same with the accomadation.. however it all seemed a bit small? - maybe it's cos there's 2 campuses for Staffordshire Univerisity... dunno..

So how far is Hanley from the campus?? How long would you have to walk in minutes?

People will tell you "Stoke is a shit hole" etc. Wrong. As we all know, "Chav" is word that is overly used. There's alot more to Stoke than people know.

A few people who have now ridden Stoke were all abit "errr i dunno, Stoke's abit rough, dunno if i want come". They've come down, found out the riding is great, i think we got police trouble once and i can't recall any chav trouble. The chavs round here are all mouth. If they start mouthing off, Just say to them what there not expecting, for example " Oi mate, Give me a fag" you reply "No" they go "You beter give me a fag or i'll stab you" you reply "Go on then"...They will walk off.

As for your bike. Just keep your eye on it. Simple as that, same everywhere really, if people see an unattended bike, they'll take it.

Nightlife. Nightlife is good, Loads of clubs in Hanley, More clubs than pubs in my opinion. As for the sugarmill what Mr_Ailsbury reffered to a few posts above, Its good if you wanna' go a full on scremo death pit, One room with Dance ? LOL. I don't recall that.

There's also Newcastle Town centre, Which is a 10 min bus ride from Hanley, again, Nightlife is great, More pubs than clubs in Newcastle though, Better riding also, Much more peaceful than Hanley town centre, Less chavs about.

I can't comment on the university because i've never been, well i have it's where i learnt all my Karate, But that was a while ago. But from what i can remember, It's nice.

So yeah, the whole "Stoke's a shithole" is bollox.

I've got you on msn Benny if you wanna discuss anything :)

Danny.

Haha, i think Danny might be refuring to me at the staart of that reply :shifty:

Like he says, stoke is built up to be really rough, but the experience i had of it was pretty sweet. Not rough at all, just sweet.

This thread isnt really about riding spots etc is it? So i cant really comment on anything else :giggle:

Having live about 5 minutes walk from the campus myself. I can tell you that stoke isn't all that bad, plenty of riding spots and the like, If your into bmx, the stoke skate plaza isn't far from the campus either, 5 - 10 minute ride if that.. The town centre is around 20 - 25 minutes walk from the campus, depending on how fast you walk lol. Usually takes me about 20 minutes. So long as you stay in the 'main' parts, like busy roads and stuff rather than venture on through the secluded areas (especially at night) Your pretty much fine regarding getting a beat down lol (though in todays society that pretty much goes for wherever it is your going).

What are you studying?

My friend is doing a law degree there and seems happy enough with it.

Should come to Birmingham really though ;) More pubs per square mile than anywhere in the world and better nightlife than most places in the UK (I'm more interested in the pubs mind).

Ahhhh some nice replies! Thanks for all of them - read through them all :)

I'm not planning to take my bike with me.. so I won't have to worry about riding spots etc etc...

Also I'm planning to study "Business Information Systems Management" ;) Hopefully get my grades... hmm.. I've applied for Liverpool John Moores as well...

But yeah, cheers for the replies guys. When I came out of the Stoke station I turned left as I saw a sign "Town Centre" and thought I'd might as well go have a look since I had time to waste.. but ended up walking to no-where :S probably got lost... So decided to walk back towards the Stoke campus.. I did see a couple of chavs to be honest.. the usual ones at bus stops. hmmm..

Yeah, thats on the nappy nights

the proper over 18 club nights are nothing like that at all, they've got a small room upstairs with like rock type stuff on, the main room is just like normal club stuff. just full on students and the like.
