Danny
Make sure all the ip/dns/gateway addresses are set to automatic unless you know what you are doing.
Hendrix
Actually.Just thinking. Look at your firewall settings, see what has been allowed through. It may have been "not allowed" through the firewall.
trials_pimp
I tried with the firewall off, still no joy. Will look at the DNS ect
Hendrix
Dude. I've had the Windows re-installed on my Mums PC. All sorted on our behalf. It's worth a try. Although a pain, it'll sort it
Bondy
If you need a last try fix, then try a piece of software called Network Magic, it will more than likely sort out any problem that you have with your LAN, its only a trial version (but you have the full program basically until it runs out), but if it fixes the problem then you can just remove it afterwards and everything will still work fine, i used to use it ages ago until i learnt how to network my computers together myself. Tomm
You don't need to reinstall windows. It's not very helpful to suggest things that are just a total waste of time (like the firewall thing earlier, and suggesting to reinstall Windows). I'm 90% sure it's a DNS thing. You connect to the wireless fine but you don't get an IP address from the router. Like Danny said, just leave all the settings as default (I.e. 'obtain an IP address automatically'). This is in network connections, choose your wireless card, properties, TCP/IP settings. If you need more of a hand, just shout but you should be able to work it out (or google it). If that doesn't work, log into the router settings and check that DNS is enabled, and that there's no protection on the router - I.e. Mac filtering. MadManMike
Another thing to check is that you're putting in the correct WEP key.I can connect to my router with the incorrect one but it will not let me browse the net or anything - it says it's connected but not... Something along those lines.
Tomm
Well we'll see I guess. But this is exactly the same symptom as I've had when I inadvertently turned off the DNS server on my router. Windows will connect to the wireless but can't get an IP address and no networking will work.

Hendrix
love how the universal fix for something people dont understand is to format :/ bless. lolI do know, I know exactly.Windows is rubbish, is a fact. I'm sorry to say that I have to use a Windows Computer for my normal day to day word processing. The reason windows is so rubbish. Windows, in my case, and in many cases, has been prone to deleting important files leading to things such as the above.I am Bias to be fair, I use Mac & PC, but I'll always use mac. (My mac has never gone wrong, ever)So I'm quite sure it's a re-install jobbie on the Windows front. I would like to see what the actually problem is. But don't ever say I don't know. Especially when I've had the same problem... Edited March 3, 2008 by Hendrix
Tomm
No. You're talking rubbish. What home firewalls are there that will block http traffic? What will reinstalling Windows do which you can't change in control panel? Oh, and Windows deletes important system files all by itself does it?

But as soon as his desktop PC goes to connect, says it's connected, but things aren't running. GUESS WHAT. A firewall can block stuff like that. And also, GUESS WHAT. A pc, when running virus checks, can and will delete things it believes to be infected. And believe this. I spent a week on a PC Geek forum trying to find out what my problem was, and they work for people like Windows, Dell etc.In the end, it was either, The firewall was blocking everything (simple click off thing), or the main thing, something went wrong, and windows needed a re-install.So I would advise, that you go on Overclockers UK's Tec part of the Forum, and ask on there. Majority of people on there, who seem to know their stuff, work with Windows, Dell, Packard Bell etc. It's worth a simple registration right ?edit : Link Edited March 3, 2008 by Hendrix
Tomm
Even after you say all of that, I'm still placing my eggs in the DNS basket. Most of the people on that forum don't work for "Windows, Dell, Packard Bell etc" they're just computer nerds the same as can be found anywhere on the internet. Working out what's wrong could be a complicated diagnostic procedure that's hard to explain over a forum. Nearly everything can be fixed if you give it enough time but it's much easier just to tell the guy to wipe his computer. Especially if the guy is as exasperating as you are. What I should have said above is just, re-install windows. And if absolutely need be, wipe.
Danny
Hendrix shut up. There is absolutely no need to reinstall windows. That's just the easy way out.As for the problem. Can you connect to your routers control panel via that computer? If so that narrows down a problem connecting to that. Also can you do the following and show us the output...Start > Run > CMD > ipconfig /all
rocks370
Try the simple stuff first....Is IE set to work offline?IS IE set to automaticaly detect settings? Can you Ping www.google from the CMD?if not try resetting the TCP/IP protocol using this toolwas the pc on the internet before wireless? AOL, dial-up?
trials_pimp
IN THE RED CORNER.......Look ill go to my mums tonight, sit with the offending pc, and have the laptop on so I can use the internet and try your ideas.Theres no need to get medevil on this.I format and reinstal will be my last option though, as it is a belt and braces repair. Also rocks, your post had too many computer words in that I dont understand
br3n
at the very worst lee you wont need to format, just repair using the windows disk, you can do that from boot or run from cd, boot is probably the better option.
