Contract Phones ?

Right guy's, my contract has run out and I need to get a new phone :) I've been so happy with my phone that i haven't kept up with the market !

My old phone was a Nokia 9500i and i'm looking for something similar, I like the look of the N95 but i don't know what there like. Is it text book nokia or something different ?

I've got no preference to provider (Except 3) and i'm after the same sort of thing as my 9500.

I'd love as much information about new phones, and what works ! I hate phones that need to be fixed every 4 months :(

Pleaseeeee help :)

n95 is on paper awesome, however battery life is poo and performance is sometimes slow. the 8gb n95 is better but the new n82 seems to be the best bet.

tmobile is good, the flext 180 is good value but they have non of the latest phones.

02 is by far the best and their online tariffs are cheaper than going into the store, so have a look.

yes, the first thing i noticed when i played with my friends n95 is that its just so damn slow and clunky. Comparable to trying to operate a computer quickly, in a dark room, wearing sunglasses and a pair of boxing gloves.

My housemate just got a new phone though an LG viewty and its really impressive. The menus are easy to use and its touchscreen so the buttons are nice and big. It also has a neat little pen and an amazing shooting game on it. Menus seem responsive, slighty faster than my k800i and the internet is good on it too. Massive screen for movies as well. Speaking of internet, he's just got it with o2 and they've given him a contract that includes completely free internet with no limits.

Internet is a biggie for me too, i need to be able to get on the Internet !

The O2 jobbie with the LG Viewty sounds good, I'll have a look on the site. I've heard that Vodafone are taking over the mobile internet market towards the end of the year, Anybody know anything about this ?

Thanks for the replies guys !

I've got an Orange m700 too, and my Dad has the HTC Touch which is actually quite nice. It's far smaller than mine (it feels almost half as thick), and has a classy finish on it. The screen is glossy and looks awesome. But overall I'm not impressed with Windows phones at all, I don't think the touch screens are good enough at the moment.

I'd definately agree with that. Even the touchscreen on the viewty is suseptible to mis-reads (you press your finger/pen and it doesn't register, and the same goes for the p900 and iPhone etc). I think it might be a while untill touchscreens can be used without draining excessive power levels and sometimes being unpredictable.

Ok, thanks guy's. I've looked at all the phones you've suggested, and it boils down to -

I really like the look of the HTC's ! They do everything i want. But, how easy is it to set up the internet on them ? And Where can i get one on contract ? The TyTN 2 seems like the best one for what i want.

Edit - Just realised if i baught a new one direct it would be unlocked, So if i got a Sim Only O2 contract with unlimited internet for £25 a Month i would be able to use it on a HTC ? With unlimited Internet ?

Internet is a piece of piss, when you turn on the WiFi the available networks just pop up and you can select which one you want to use, or you just open IE and it dials up.

HTC produce phones for O2 under the XDA range, so you could just get one of those, rather than buying one.

the thing i dont like about the htc, as i had one for a bit, is its not very phone like to use, same with all windows phone. to use them as a phone, there not as good as simple phone, and do you really need to run a pocket pc, my n95 is good. but then i really like the g800 too.

as for t mobile not having the latest phones for free, i thought the same thing, as in i was going to pay £85 to get me n95 with them, but if u walk into the store, they give you discounts for taking out there insurance, which is advisable to have, i took out t mobile smart plan insurance for £6 a month, and they gave me the £12.50 a month 3gb 3g network thing with phone as a modem, for £7.50, and the phone for free.

It's not really the fact that they're unresponsive, it's the whole idea of using a touchscreen. You get no feedback from your fingers about what you're doing. I can write a text on a normal phone without looking, whereas on a touchscreen phone you always have to be looking where your fingers are. Especially as sometimes it won't register a press or it'll be the wrong character.

The thing that winds me up most with mine (and I don't know if I'm unique) though is this: If I'm using the touchscreen keypad, occasionally it'll register a button press as if I'm pressing the start button (which is weird since the start button is in the top corner, away from the keypad which is at the bottom of the screen). So the start menu pops up and if your fingers are moving fast it's very easy to press to run a program. So you're typing a text and then BAM! A program will start loading. Then you have to wait for it to load and then quit out of the program. <_<

As much as I love all the things my phone can do, the next phone I get won't be one of these I don't think.

Having said all that, the touchscreen on the iPhone is MUCH more responsive than on my phone (HTC/Orange m700) so perhaps it's not half as frustrating to use. Maybe when they sort out a 3g one with a decent amount of storage and lots of 3rd party programs for it, I'll get one.

Haha, thats what annoys me about Tom Tom's ! I managed to press the wrong button and drove 15 miles to far !

I'm really liking the TyTN2 at the moment, i've been watching reviews and stuff on Youtube and it all seems to be pretty good :)

Is it EXACTLY the same phone/menu's/everything as the new XDA 2 just re badged ?

Probably. HTC make phones and then they get rebadged as Orange/O2/T-mobile/whatever. Some of them have subtle differences (For example the t-mobile version of my phone didn't have wifi - presumably it was disabled to increase phone data charges which is a bit sneaky) but a lot of those hidden features can probably be unlocked with software updates (www.xda-developers.com).

I think the built-in keyboard on the TyTn is probably a good thing, it would prevent half of the annoyances I've had with my phone. Provided you could deal with the extra size.

Hmmm, well if i buy the HTC version direct and get a Sim only O2 contract i *Should* get all the applictaions.

The Disabled Wifi things a bit cheeky !

That's a well expensive way of doing it though - they're £300+ sim-free from HTC. Just read around - I decided to avoid the T-mobile one and get the Orange version and it was a good choice.

Any applications can be found on xda-developers, and you can change the software. I ditched the Windows Mobile 5 Orange software that came on my phone and got a different rom with WM 6.0. It requires a bit of effort but it's worth it.

There's a fix for it on xda-dev. I'll ...

Attach it.

You just have to put it on your phone and run it, if you put it in startup in windows it would make life a lot easier :)
