Urban mammoth
Dunno if anyone has seen on the news!?17 teenage suicides since jan 07...do you think it's just coincidence?a guy on the news this morning was saying how it kind of 'catches on'. Kids that are depressed or are feeling unloved etc see how much attention another kid gets from commiting suicide and decides to do it and so the cycle continues....another rumour going round was that there was a 'suicide pact' of some sort....scary none the less!!?anyways just thought i would ignite a discussion...cheersDanp.s full story here

Jolfa
Ah, natural selection, 17 less hopeless mardy bastards in the world
Urban mammoth
haha i haven't...........although i'm sure i wouldn't become instantly suicidal if i did happen to visit!apparently they are all none related and all 17 had major personal problems!if that's true then it is crazzzzzy how they all lived in the bridgend area!but they must have been linked somehow because to of the kids were cousins, and they died 2 days apart!......hmmmm
Muel
I heard on the radio that two of them were cousins, when a lad killed himself, his bird cousin did it within 3 hours.
Al_Fel
At least they are doing the job properly none of this farty slit your wrists or overdose bullshit. They wanted to be dead they are dead happy days.I'm actually named after an uncle who hung himself. As Jolfa said its natural selection. Its become very rare these days for natural selection to shine though and thats probably why the world is full of rejects and idiots. Tomm
I thought you would be the only Anal.Everyone's saying it's a big conspiracy but it's a fairly big (ish) town and on average 3-4 people kill themselves every year in a town that size. Because they've had 17 in a year is coincidence, nothing more.

Because they've had 17 in a year is coincidence, nothing more.but that's nearly a 600% increase in the suicide rate!?so you're saying that according to statistics, bridgend has had it's fill of suicides for another 4-6 years?!hmmmmm i'm just saying it looks really really strange........meh i live in yorkshire, it's nice up here.. 1a2bcio8
I think when people are susceptible to ideas of suicide and then somebody in close proximity evidences the capacity to kill themselves, that it may give more confidence to those people to act out those ideas.I understand if somebody wants to kill themselves but at the same time there's a good chance that the way they are feeling can be changed given the right method. I wouldn't wrap this up neatly into "natural selection" though otherwise you're also justifying my killing you, robbing you, etc. etc. just because I'm bigger and stronger than you. That term oversimplifies a much more complex situation.

Simpson
Think everyones being reall insensitive - Round their area there is not really any job oportinitys and is a really deprived area for jobs and people really have to struggle, i mean I've never been there but Wales with initially really hardly hit by the coal mining thing and its trajic if its really come to this. I do belive one of the mother said something along the lines of, "its trajic that my child has seen suicide as the only way to ever make something of himself", so now the news has got involved i can only see it getting worse, like suicide bomber being remembered long after their deaths - rememberance myspace pages etc. so i can only see it getting worse? Doubt it was a pact, seems far to advanced and someone not spilling the beans yet.... but yea tis bad
Tomm
but that's nearly a 600% increase in the suicide rate!?But it's one town out of hundreds like it in the UK. There may also be an element of what Rowly said - people with suicidal thoughts being able to see a 'successful' case, and the chance of notoriety since it's in the newspapers etc. But nothing more than that. People who think it's too much of a coincidence obviously don't have a very good idea about statistics. The Great British public, then. Given enough time, over the years something like this is not just possible, it's a statistical certainty.

BUT, did loads on it in Geography and stuff, but most the jobs there are for females in boring factory work not many bread winning jobs.... prove me totally wrong if you live there though

1a2bcio8
sounds like you're reading from a textbook about the suffragettes.I still fail to see what it has to do with teen suicide? You can't really separate the individual from their environment. Unemployment can effect individuals in any number of ways - just try to imagine a struggling family or extend that to a struggling town. It's hardly going to be all bouncy castles and ice cream (so to speak). An individual growing up in that type of environment might ultimately develop quite a negative perspective on life. Token
Their ages seem to range in the region of 17 - 22. Which is the sort of age you go out an basically start your life. Look for a job and make something of yourself. If these kids can't find a way out, I guess it would be quite easy to get stuck in rut thinking there's no life you there in Bridgend. Looking at their pics, there only seems to be one 'Emo' girl, the rest just appear to be normal looking guys/girls, so I think calling them all Emo mardy bums is abit unfair an not true. Dr. Nick Riviera
I see the point about unemployment and other factors, I see the point about coincidence. i also think that nobody would give two shits had it not been in the papers.i'm sat on the fence for this one chaps, i just think there's little to debate without any hard evidence. Muel
Did anyone hear about the error made by the press?17 is for the county, not the town. The town has a population of 39k, the county 132k. I can't find out how many people in the town died, but I'll keep looking. I think the radio said 6 though. The media has been blowing this out of context, making it seem that 17 people have comitted suicide in a pretty small town, which is wrong. Mike Deere
Most of my family live in / come from Bridgend and don't want to kill themselves. Although saying that I just found out from my cousin that we do have some kind of depressive gene running in the family... How strange.
