DaveG40
Morning All,Just found your forum this morning after picking up my first trials bike last night.I won a Saracen Extreme off of Ebay for £36.01 - Pictures:Link to Listing - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...bayphotohostingIf it is not an "extreme" let me know as I plan to re-paint and re-fit decals to the frame if possible to be sourced. The listing mentions the buckled wheel but the pedal arm or bearings are shot and the b/b need replacing. Peddles are easy enough to swop out so will sort that out soon but I have got a problem with the chain being a single speed. There is far too much slack in the chain making it horrible to ride - i've found a DMR tensioner as shown here:Will this fit my frame and do the job OK?My last question is about the buckled wheel - how much am i expecting to pay to have this trued up and where is best around Coventry?Look forward to meeting some of you hopefully,Regards,Dave
matt rushton
Just one promblem, it's not really a trials bike. Will be ok to learn basic moves on.
steve@banbury-trials
i agree with matt rushton im afraid, back to topic, you can true it easily enough on your own mate ,if you search the wiki thread in trials chat and it'll explain how to do this.steve
DaveG40
Just one promblem, it's not really a trials bike. Will be ok to learn basic moves on.LOL - that just shows how much of a noob i am - i thought as the frame was smaller and dipped toward the back it made it a trials frame!?!I bought the bike with the view to upgrade my current commuter - a saracen furnace mountain bike:I bought the furnace after my specialized was stolen outside the local shop as a stop gap - the specialized was old but did the job!Anyway - hopefully the single speed will be quick enough around town for me else i'll probably convert it back to a 27 speeder with a standard derailleur.Do we think the DMR will fit and work for me? Rob Brodie
Will this fit my frame and do the job OK?My last question is about the buckled wheel - how much am i expecting to pay to have this trued up and where is best around Coventry?Look forward to meeting some of you hopefully,Regards,Davehmmmmmm I'm not too sure about the bike for a trials bike i personally think u'd be better off selling it and getting a trials pacific bike. You should be able to make a profit on it in terms of the tensioner if your not going to sell it then yeah it should fit i don't see why not But besides all that ^ welcome to the forum.Keep to the guidelines and you should be validated in no time like i just have The guidelines should be found here.good luck and welcome to the forum..rob.. DaveG40
ThanksI'll buy the DMR and get it setup hopefully rectifying the problem.I've had a look at the rules and all is well - same as most other forums - I mainly play with cars but after buying my pride and joy I decided driving it to work everyday was not the most ideal way to keep it mint! Here is a pic of my car:1989 VW Golf Rallye For those who have not seen one before - that is a standard body shell - all metal - no bodykit - is like the original R32!Dave
Skoze
when you get validated (which will be soon me thinks) you need to posy a pic of that up in the golf thread
Jolfa
I started riding on one of those bikes! Was alright 'til it got stolen Smart Rallye aswell, has it had the charger rebuilt recently? If not, get it done before it blows up! Has it got the Recaro's or just the Rallye GTI style seats? DaveG40
Thanks all,I've currently got the stock Rallye half leather interior which is nice enough - the electric recaro's are very rare and something i'd like in future! How do i get validated? Do i need to contact an admin?Shame about ur bike being stolen - this is partly the reason for riding more often is that my mates bike was a lot more fun for the work hack than the car as i'm not paranoid about parking the bike!Looks like i found a local company willing to true the rear wheel - just need the pedals and single speed tensioner to make her the trusty work hack!Do pedals work on the same basis when fitting - lefty losey rightey tighty?Dave
Luke Rainbird
How do i get validated? Do i need to contact an admin?Do pedals work on the same basis when fitting - lefty losey rightey tighty? One of them's reverse threaded, it'll be pretty obvious when you get them, and they should also have L/R on them so you know which side they goValidation occurs when the admin decide you're a valuable enough member to be let loose in the main forum, so keep up the useful/informative posts with good spelling and grammar and you'll be there in no time at all
DaveG40
Thanks...I think i'm going to try and get the pedals off tonight and get my hands on some new ones ASAP ready to fit. That way when the DMR arrives and is fitted I should have finished my painting of parts and ready for the new wagon to be unleashed!Single speed doesn't really bother me too much but may end up a bit slow on the road... trial and error i suppose - may end up with a DMR and single speed cog / crank for sale! lol
Luke Rainbird
Just grabbed the spare pedals next to me - left hand side is reverse threaded
DaveG40
Just grabbed the spare pedals next to me - left hand side is reverse threaded Thanks Mate,Will get them stripped of tonight then and keep an eye open for a new set.I would use plastic ones for now but would prefer metal pedals as they tend to have better grip imo...I spanked all my cash buying this last night (only £36 but i'm poor at the moment!) so will be getting this all sorted when paid next week,Basically - left side is right to losen and right pedal is left to losen as a normal thread direction...Think that is right!Dave
eskimo
Yeah that's right. The bike should be fine for the meantime. For £30 it seems a real bargain, although i wouldn't bother with finding any stickers for it though. Pedals are also cheap enough, average about £17 a pair for standard metal ones. It probably isn't worth upgrading the bike to much for the moment though.
Muel
I would just ride it as a park bike, good find though.

DaveG40
Cheers All...On further inspection the l/h pedal arm is worn and there is slight play in the b/b.Think my daily commuter has a suitable arm i can steal to fit with new pedals as a quick fix but may just put it in for a new b/b as i dont have the tools and give them the parts to refit.Should be getting a new rear wheel / tyre with 9 speed cassette and derailleur, and have also been looking for a 9 speed shifter as single speed is not working for my commute - i used it today and found myself making slow progress!Downside is i'll need to find a new chain, shifter and cables but the rest should be sorted. All in all it should become a pretty decent work hack - just need to find a decent lock so i dont lose this one! lol
