Spoke Key..?

I swear i've been through more spokes keys than anyone else. I either loose them, they get nicked, they break or there just plain out crap.

The Park Tools one seems the best but still doesn't retain its shape after several wheels. I also had a pair of the Ice Toolz ones off Tarty, they were also crap. I very much doubt any wheel regular wheel builder would use them? My red one which i bought ages ago as a back-up got used the other day for one wheel. It managed to expand out and ended up not fitting a fresh nipple at all. It was a pretty poor fitting to begin with anyway, which was probably the cause.

I think i'm going to order another Park Tools one for the time being.

So what do you all use?

Those bright plastic disc ones are good (don't know the name). Well, they're comfortable, I don't know how long they'll last but I don't build 600 wheels :P

The park rubber ones (get the green one) are good but the triangle ones are horrible.

spokey (Y) get the red one

That's the one. I'd still go for the Park one, but I don't know what the difference in price is. The Parks ones are really expensive.

I bought a multi-size (4 in 1) key from Edinburgh Bike (own brand) for a fiver. It's really good actually - small for taking out and quite comfortable. There are loads of choices though - if you can, have a feel to see what they're like before you buy them. If you're building hundreds of wheels, get a good Park one that will last. But for most of us it's only the comfort that's important (Y)

  • 4 years later...

I had a Park one for over 600 wheelbuilds and JUST replaced it the other day. They are the best. I can't see how you managed to kill it?! haha

As for the IceToolz, also had one of those for more than a year (almost daily use) with no problems.

I bought an Icetoolz 08C5 spoke key last week. It caused damaged to my spoke nipples by biting into the metal. Also it was a b**ch to use (too tight). I sent it right back and bought a cheapo one instead. I also bought an Icetoolz 8mm allen key for my cranks and found that it was a bit too big, maybe because of the chrome coating, so it wouldn't go into some bolts easily. The materials don't seem very durable either, easily dented/scratched. (N)

We use the IceToolz allen keys in the workshop here and they seem to be pretty good all round, really. They get used a lot and haven't seemed to really wear much.

Pretty sure that Nick will probably have got over this issue in the last 4 and a bit years...

Yeah just about tongue.gif

But it's safe to say in the beginning i sucked with wheels. Building wise i mean, i still manage to dent, flatspot and snap spokes still giggle.gif Managed to get my building down real well now i think, spending hour and half and have tried quite a few different techniques which is cool.

Also i've managed to hold on to my black Park spoke key for a long time now with no issues, the print on the rubber has even worn off. I reckon i probably had a duff or copy of the Park tools one if i did manage to splay it out. Or i was being retarded. haha!

I've also learnt over the years, shit tools are shit.
