Davetrials
After seeing this, i figured surley that would shave a fair bit of weight of the old bicycle, but i wanted to know just how far you could go and just how much strength would be comprimised
love_trials
Don't know that you would lose ANY necessary strength that you would need, doing as in the pic above, bars and stem held on to steerer, steerer held in place by full tube. front hops put pressure on the steerer and may stretch the welds, where the head tube is welded to the frame, but you havn't affected that, so i cat see your are going to cause any problems doing that?!?Don't know enough about forces to say for certain, but i know a bit to say i would be happy riding it! Davetrials
Well it would be on a bmx as well so i dunno if that changes anything?
cai
Well I've never seen it done to a BMX before, but I'd imadgen it would work. At the end of the day, your only removing material thats not used. As long as it's done evenly there should be no problems!*imagine
0zzy
i dont think that the fact that your doing it to a bmx changes anything, perhaps ask adam from tarty ?
Ash-Kennard
do the sides of the seat tube too
26inch
Theres an eastern frame with it done i think. Its obviously not gonna be quite as strong but i doubt you would loose much strength, depends how much u cut out. + do the sides of seattube too
Tim/Trialsin USA
I guess it depends on your definition of "fair bit of weight". That ammount of aluminum (particularly there, where it is quite thin) is not going to ammount to much of anything.... certainly not more than double digit grams. If you ride outside at all, ultimatly you will collect as much grime and dirt than you are losing in weight is my guess. Having said that, it is pretty cool looking. After seeing this, i figured surley that would shave a fair bit of weight of the old bicycle, but i wanted to know just how far you could go and just how much strength would be comprimised Edited February 13, 2008 by Tim/Trialsin USA
Davetrials
Well i want my new bike to pretty pretty individual, and light, but i dont wanna get silly.. BUT a hole in my headtube would be kool:P
Mark W
They've done it on the Eastern Grim Reaper fully, and Stolen have a new cut-out on their headtubes too, as do another company. So yeah, it's do-able, just do it well, really.
matt middler
Well i want my new bike to pretty pretty individual, and light, but i dont wanna get silly.. BUT a hole in my headtube would be kool:PHow would it be individual by cutting a hole in the headtube, its already been done, and it also wouldn't save that much weight. Shaun H
How would it be individual by cutting a hole in the headtube, its already been done, and it also wouldn't save that much weight. It's more individual than not doing it. matt middler
I agree it would be more individual than not to do it at all, but if your at a ride where someone else has it done, your no longer individual. If you want to try and stand out from the crowd, I dont think drilling the headtube is the way.
basher
the new montys come with it like that. Aslong as you have the corners rounded and not square it will be fine, Also you can do it inbetween where the chainstays connect to the BB zeniths have it done there. Mark W
Not on a BMX you couldn't Head-tube and side of seat-tube = ideal though.

freetrials661
How would it be individual by cutting a hole in the headtube, its already been done, and it also wouldn't save that much weight.Everything adds up, and the front of a headtube really dosnt need to be too strong, so I say go for it.
