A few nights back myself and a friend (conor the basher) had been fixing our bikes and at about 12am we randomly went out the back of his house and started riding on nothing more than a few house bricks and a few concrete blocks we had made from left overs of the builders materials :P.

Anyway, we were just riding out there with a bit of music just moving things about, practising balance and precision and slanting/ twisting things to make things more interesting. We were out there for a good few hours just coming up with different lines , combinations and techniques and ways to get over things. It felt kind of good to make a change from the usual TGS 'lets go as far and high as we can' attitude towards trials and we thouroughly enjoyed the time we were out there. It really shows how little you need in trials to be able to make a fun riding situation.

Does anyone else do things like this or have any input on what they think?

Or am i just a moron that should be trying to add extra cm's to my sidehop everyday? :P

Max....

Sounds about right, Max.

Me and Aussie Dave were out last week and sessioned half a pallet for hours!

Up against one wall it became something to hook, yet on the stairs it was soething to nose manual up, spin into and wallride

Running the risk of another TGS vs 'street' style argument (please don't take this the wrong way!) it seems that this is the kind of 'back to basics', fun style of riding that everyone can relate to.

Not everyone can sidehop 50", or leap 10ft gaps, but when stuff is only 1' high it can be ridden by almost anyone (even the roadie that rode past and down the pallet on the stairs!) which leads to riders bouncing ideas of each other, and sparking up new ways of getting yourself and your bike around.

Love it! :P

its been said before, but ill say it again: the best fun on a bike is wheelies + skids ;)

I can ride a curb for about an hour, small stuff is fun because there are countless moves you can do on it because its not so high you can only sidehop or tap it: 180 on to it, and then 360 of it etc etc.

I hate riding kerbs and things like that as it's kind of boring but walls just below handlebar height are great fun you can just open up your trick bag if you like and start being creative.

nothing wrong with going big but creative though so once you've devolped something on a kerb you can start inch pinching it

I've pretty much doubled the distance I can gap by playing on a corner in a car park near me where the footpath forms an 'L'. I go parallel with the kerb on one side of the 'L' and launch off the kerb at an angle to put the back wheel into the kerb perpendicular to it. It's got me used to building speed with a half pedal stroke before I launch, all without the risk of binning myself on high up gaps (Which I'm getting more confident on).

Trials improved pretty much every bike skill I ever did or wanted to do.

It just makes it so much easier to learn.

A few years back when I had a jump bike I wanted to learn a fakie roll back, do it on a trials and it worked first time.

But also not just kerbs, from trials I have learnt tricks that can be done on flat ground such as; Hopping, Nose hops, squeakers, crank flips, standing on rear wheel whilst hopping, 360, 360 on the rear wheel.

Lots of stuff I would have found impossible on a jump bike.

To be honest give me a slope and a 1 foot high longish wall with a pallett and I would be more happy than ever. I have watched this sport change and evolve over 5 yearish and you see the same thing day in day out with who can go highest biggest, all it is is that these people are masters of the techniques which means generally they look all the same as they are all mastering the same technique, but with a few small objects you define the true creative sportsman of our world who can create something mind blowing out of pretty much nothing.

trials is erm, kinda lame when u think about it

wasting away hours of ur life riding curbs on a stupid looking bike with no seat.

i have no idea why i ride trials, on paper its the shittest sport ever

lmao this man speaks the truth, reason i quit to be honest appart from my career etc, but i didnt want some fit lass come up to me in the streets of doncaster who i went college with seeing me ride a stupid bike wearing a helmet, just didnt seem rate!

They're all pretty damn fun.

So what happened to those DOB rims you were testing? Final rating?

Definately for compotition use. Didn't hold up to street too well. I suppose if your smooth and dont grind your rims too often they would be fine though :)

Nothign wrong with the front ones if your running a disc though (Y).

Ive got an industrial estate round the corner with loads of bigger stuff to ride, but i way prefer dossing arorund on the cerb outside my house with a MP3 player and a bottle of water.... literally i ride the cerb for so long.... cant wait to enter the cerb comp :) hahahaha all the stuff i do on the bigger stuff all has its roots from a cerb, learnt a 180 sidehop spinny thing on a cerb, and perfected it, nailed it almost bar height at the weekened, once you have tech. its a peice of piss

Some people see things different and others see different things. Curbs for example can offer much fun. Also most trials riders never go backwards, but others use their front wheel more.

I honestly can't see much point in what i'm saying or what you were either

I'm not really into going big now. I'm always looking for new lines everywhere I go.

I can sidehop and gap etc, just not that far. But meh, I enjoy sessioning smaller stuff.

Like the other day I went down this road just out of the village, and road on these small concree blocks for ages... They were all in a line so it was kinda hard to do gaps etc, but it was still fun.

Just shows that trials is way more than just getting up big walls in silly ways...

It's all about the small technical stuff! I've seen alot of videos of people doing big dropoffs and gaps without even being able to line it up on their back wheel properly to take off to start with, looks rubbish, and must be harsh on the bike.. ;)

Depends whether you like difficult or dangerous... I'm all for difficult, but if the consequences of a handlebar/chain/crank breaking or a loss of grip or balance would lead to a big fall I'm not interested. It really pisses off people I cycle with though, as they know I'm able to do certain stuff but haven't the nerve, while they haven't the skill to do it but have the nerve to try it...

Those that like both the difficult and dangerous categories are the ones with sponsorship deals... :)

Biff. Behave, You used to love riding, only reason you are able to say "i didnt want some fit lass come up to me in the streets of doncaster who i went college with seeing me ride a stupid bike wearing a helmet, just didnt seem rate!" is because you've whitnessed another side of life. When you rode it was a completly different aspect.

I may ride a stupid bike and wear a helmet but atleast im not out there gettin pissed on the streets or taking drugs, abusing people or mugging old people.

I know which i'd rather do.

Danny.
