Crankset Tools?

Shay

Recommended Posts

I have a three ring crankset and need to change my outer ring. (I took a bit of a fall and snapped off two of the teeth).

So I was wondering, what sort of tools am I going to need to diseamble the crankset and put it back togther again?

Any links to where I can get them from?

Thanks

Shay.

erm what crankset is it...You will need a crank puller to take the crank off and a allen key to undo the chain rings and also you will need one off these to hold the chainring bolt when you undo it this stops it spinning round when you undo it with a allen key!

Square taper crank puller

this is the Tool that holds the chainring nut when undoing it with allen key this stops the nut spinning when turning it with a allen key

Think it's just a 5mm allen key or two? All you need to do (providing it's the 4 arm crank type) is undo the bolts, whack the old chainring off and then replace it... As far as i know.

So I'm not going to need a Hex socket or a crank extractor?

You'll need an 8mm allen key for your BB bolts, two 5mm allen keys for your chainring bolts , a crank extractor and a 14mm spanner.

Undo 8mm bolts

Screw in crank extractor first section, tighten with spanner

Screw in crank extractor second section, tighten with spanner, crank will start to fall off

Undo chainring bolts with 1 5mm allen key on each side of the bolt.

EDIT: Wait... it's the big ring?

In that case you can just undo the chainring bolts and pull it through the cranks and take it off over the pedal and replace it, it's not really rocket science.

If all you want to do is change the outer chainring you'll need a 5mm allen key and possibly a big dirty screwdriver (Or a Shimano TL-FC20 chainring bolt tool) in case the chainring bolts just spin rather than unscrewing. Undo the chainring bolts on the outside of the crank (Pedal side of the chainrings) and you should be able to replace the big chainring without removing the crank.
