bob dmr
Hi, has any one had a go at building their own wheels? Have the wheels you've built lasted?Basically I've just ordered a new rear hub and rim, spokes, etc and I'm not to keen on having to wait two weeks to have it built, as could do with it now. Not only that, Im thinking it can't be a bad thing to be able to build my own wheels.I've had a good look at the wheel building guide on this site, are their any other good guides out their? Endohopper
Certainly worth learning , and the recently deceased Sheldon Brown'swebsite offers a very useful guide that taught me plenty .

basher
i taught myself to do wheels using sheldon browns site posted above. Its not hard to, just takes common sense and patience getting it all true. One thing i would say is that when trueing sometimes from having to tighten them up all time to try get it all good the spokes have become uber tight. So every now and then i usually go around the wheel and undo every spoke a turn or 2 so then when ive finshed trueing i can just tension it. The Riddlers
Just use decent spokes and nipples! My first ever wheel build lasted on my downhill bike for 2 years, then my old trials bike for another year. Only got rid as I quit biking for a while.
bob dmr
just finished building my wheel. I tried to follow the guide in wikki, but i was a bit unsure about it, It tells you to start to the right if the valve, but in doing so it means that you are putting a spoke from the drive side of the hub, in to a hole on the opposite side of the rim (as the spoke holes are not in line, they alternate from one side of the rim to the other) if that makes any sense. I ended up just starting from the left and twisting my hub the other way. I used my other wheels on my other bikes in the end as a guide. Did any one find this when they built your wheels?Oh and i did also try flipping the rim around, but the holes were still in the wrong place. Muel
I've built 4/5 wheels and swapped 4 rims. I also changed all the nipples in my current wheels, which means you have to slacken and re-tension them, which is the hard bit. Getting it laced is easy.Do it, tis pretty easy if you take your time.
