Lewis T-REX
Heyi have a onza T-rex and what has happened is that the threads in the rear 4 bolt mounts have bin striped what is the best way to fix this problem?i have tryed to tap them with 5mm tap but it didnt do out. thinking of tryin to tap it out to 6mmCheers Lewis
_Owen.
You can tap to 6mil, but the best bet is to get it helicoiled! Much stronger than a tap!
steve@banbury-trials
use a jubilee clip to hold the mounts till you get your helecoil, this means you're still be able to ride
basher
tap it m6 and drill your maggie mounts out so the bolts will fit or heilcoil it m5 or helicoil m6 if you want
Muel
Get them helicoiled to M5, once upon a time one of the Yamaha race teams fitted every thread on their bkes with helicoils as they are supposedly stronger than the original aluminium thread.I've had various things helicoiled, never failed on me. spaceman
Uhuh, same thing happened to me on my echo. Being an engineering student, I had access to the workshops, and I re-drilled the mounts to 5.5mm, then tapped to M6. Then I had to mill the slots on the clamps to 6mm. Now all four mounts are using M6 bolts, which are much stiffer! As in, the bolts are stiffer than the M5 ones.I used a hand drill at first, to drill the mounts on the frame. Unfortunately the drill bit broke, but I managed to take it out. Best is to ask a friend over to help you hold the frame on the drilling machine. The drilling machine is way better, faster too. cai
Helicoil!Your local engineers should be able to do it for relatively cheap, Tenby Tyres do two for £7-50!
Captain Scarlet
Helicoiling is your best option. You get to keep the same bolt size and in the unlikely event of stripping the thread again you just replace the coil. It's stronger because the coil that replaces your original thread is steel, as aposed to the standard soft alluminium. Muel
you could always buy the kit for £20 and do the helicoiling yourself.
Dave Anscombe
Yep ive recently stripped A thread in my maggie mounts....all u need to do is drill the hole to 5mm/5.5....tap it to m6 and insert a m5 heli coil.....i will do all 4 mounts as im told by many people the helicoil inserts are a hell of a lot stronger Dave
Scott Norman
heli coil so so much stronger
