Boswell
This is amazing! I was impressed when sony brought out an 8GB pro duo and then they go and double it! This has to be the maximium surley? http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronic...earchtype=genre Edited February 10, 2008 by Boswell

Joe Sheehan!
Nah not at all, you'll be able to get 128gb ones soon. Then 256, then your computer hard drive WILL be a memory stick...

Endohopper
... your computer hard drive WILL be a memory stick...Yup , less heat generation , better read / write times , less shock sensitive etc ...
Fish-Finger-er
theres 32gb compact flash cards floating round, and there reasonably cheap too (talking around £90 for one)the next stage as i see it, is wifi/3g cards you get for laptops, it wont be long before they become external harddrive slots for say 120gb "external" hard cards. Dr. Nick Riviera
give it a year and most new stuff will have solid state hard drives. just need the price to come down
JonMack
Yeah thats the only thing that sucks at the moment, the price to gb ratio is ridiculous, but sooner or later it will do the same as harddrives and drop like a lead balloon.Did anyone see that computer with the SSD Raid setup, it was awesome.http://www.nextlevelhardware.com/storage/battleship/There! JonMack
I think the speed would be compromised because of the adapter but I guess if you got a fast CF card by a decent manufacturer I don't see why it wouldnt work...Just had a look,http://www.addonics.com/products/flash_mem...er/adsahdcf.aspThere's a SATA to CF converter, and this guy ran an old powerbook off a CF card, so yeah I guess it would be possible.http://lowendmac.com/reviews/07/flash.html Edited February 10, 2008 by JonMack

JonMack
Bear in mind how old that is, he's booting onto like... OS 8.1 and stuff, I reckon it would be considerably faster than a hard drive, but I don't know how they cope with constant access and lots of read/write cycles, when they're used in a camera/mp3 player it's not very often, but with a hard drive it's constantly in use... Tomm
I don't know how they cope with constant access and lots of read/write cyclesBadly. SSDs are made so that the memory can cope with a much higher number of read/write cycles, and in addition the SSD controller spreads the workload across the drive so it's used 'evenly' (minimising the risk of too many read/write cycles). JonMack
I wouldn't like to imagine, thousands as far as I know, but there hasn't been an official RRP announced yet.Tomm, with the middle men returned, so they cope badly or they cope well? With the controller spreading the workload surely that would mean they can cope with it enough to be put in computers, otherwise I guess companies wouldnt spec their computers with them...What's the average shelf life of a normal hard drive? Danny
Normal computer hard drives can last ages really im sure ive got one somewhere thats about 10 years old (i think most are guaranteed for 5 years). But then again there's also the chance that they will die after 6 months.Saying that even if a SSD only lasted 3-4 years id hardly be bothered if it cost a reasonable price. Since i upgrade my hardware often enough anyway.
JonMack
Yeah I'm a firm believer of the three year cycle so I guess even if they only lasted 3-4 years by then I would have upgraded, I plan on upgrading my MacBook Pro this year and that's only 2 years old, the only reason I'm choosing to upgrade that rather than my iMac is because my iMac doesnt do anything other than play music, but sooner or later I will upgrade that too.I look forward to the days where SSDs are as affordable as normal HDDs. With the controller spreading the workload surely that would mean they can cope with it enough to be put in computers, otherwise I guess companies wouldnt spec their computers with them...CF cards would cope badly. I was on about how current SSDs are designed differently to CF cards. SSDs can spread the workload whereas CF cards cannot. At the moment, having an SSD is not about how long it will last. It's about how big your eWang is. By the time these SSDs fail (it might be 2 years, it might be 20), they will be mainstream. People who buy them now won't care if they die in 2 years.
