External Hard Drives

Evening allllll..

Thinking about getting an external hard drive but confused about what type to get.

Portable, Desktop?? What are the advantages and disadvantages of getting a portable one?? Is it slower?

I've been told Western Digital is pretty good, but yeah.. I'm looking for about 120gb. Are there any bargains out there?

Many thanks :)

Adios.

Portables are slower but you don't need a power supply, useful if you've got a laptop.

If you've got a desktop i'd recommend these

750GB for £110

500GB for £75

I know you said you only want 120GB but I'm of the opinion that the more storage you get, the better. Plus it's pretty much the more you buy the cheaper it gets.

if you only want 120gb buy a new internal, you can get huge internal drives for pennies.

if you're going external, seagate, WD and Lacie are all good. portable drives will run off usb, desktop ones will have a power supply.

you can get 500gb for less than £80 everywhere, and probably for about 60 online, but you're best off not looking at anything under 320gig because it wont be economically viable.

To be honest they're all the same, there aren't really any bad ones. Just get the one that's the cheapest/looks best.

The small laptop drives are a bit slower but it's unlikely you'll be really testing an external drive anyway, but they're loads more expensive for a given size and the biggest you can get is either 250 or 320Gb I think. So unless you need the portability, get a normal one.

Disasterboy are you sure about them being cheaper. I haven't looked but in the past I've seen external drives cheaper than internal ones (economy of scale?) and the enclosures are usually at least another £20-30 on top.

yeah, i was surprised to find that there was an external drive for ~£65 and an internal for ~£65 also, not including caddy

they do terabyte ones! WELL EXPENSIVE though... www.dabs.com have them

I might be selling my Lacie 250gb one soon.

Looks like a large lego brick, lol.

Has lasted me about a year and a half so far with no problems at all. (think it may have been turned off for a total of 24hrs in that time period, lol)

oh and you can get 1TB ones for well under £200 now. I'm after one as I've filled both my 250 and 300gb ones. (N)

I've found this..

Harddrive

Good deallllllll?? or not? It's via USB.. but what's eSATA??

Not an amazing deal as people have found plenty of bigger drives for less money. I've got one of those (same as that but 250gb and no eSATA) and I find it fine, does exactly what it should do and looks pretty to boot. Like I said before, whether that's worth it is up to you to decide.

Personally I use the LaCie ones a lot, in the 250Gb, 320Gb and 1Tb varieties at work and home. So far, no problems whatsoever. I use one as an 'off site' backup - I've copied my music and photos to it, and it now stays at my parents house. Not a bad idea, leaving a second copy of your stuff at another location.
