Tar

Hi all. I was just wondering if tar really is good for your magura pads.

Please let me know.

Thanks

Andrew :)

Very commonly asked question.

Tar is effective but not ideal if you: Have a smooth rim and you ONLY EVER ride in the dry. Tar is shocking if you are ever planning to ride in the wet.

What you really want is a grind (which is when your wheel is grinded with an angre grinder to create a rough surface with some harder compound pads specifically designed for a grind eg Koxx Browns, Rock Blues (found on Tarty Bikes))

I used to use tar, it was always shit.

I did bite well, but the hold was shit, when it got wet it was shit, it comes off and goes all over your frame and is gay to get off, if you put too little on, it doesn't work, too much and it sticks on.

Grind it.

To be totally honest in my experiance and a few mates tar is total crap. Yes it makes your brake bitey to a certain extent but,

1) It doesn't work in the wet

2) It doesn't work in the cold

3) You have to keep applying it

4) It makes your brake stick rarther than using friction (like a grind does) to stop it from moving and sometimes this can be a problem.

5) It's not as good as a grind.

i tryed tar and hairspray... it works but nothing beats a grinded rim, the grind lasts longet, it works in the wet and dry weather and it is not messy like tar.

i use a soft pad on my grinded rim which wears the pads a bit quicker but the grined lasts longer unlike using a harder pad which wears the grined on the rim and the rim.

hope it helps you out.

As has been said above, tar is shite. All it can offer in the dry is a fairly good hold/ bite and some noise.

The downsides are that:

  • When it gets wet, it turns to oil, makes a mess.
  • It has to be constantly re-applied.
  • VERY tempremental, too little and it offers no real advantage, too much and it clogs the pads up, makes the rim horrible and the brake pads get stuck to the wheel when you brake
  • Just generally not worth the hassle.
And now, i will do my usual of defending the rims from the evils of angle grinder, just buy some soft compound pads (i.e zoo's) and make sure that the rim stays clean.

i had tar once and it was good

but nothing beats a f**king good bleed and setup for your magura

and a grind, although i've not ridden with one myself, i can see how it works better than tar

tar also makes your brake stupidly loud

so if you have tar, don't go downhill

Hi there. I would go for a rim with a grind but if you can't get one then i would use tar because it makes the brake a wee bit better and gives it a better hold.
