Phil H
Hi all. I was just wondering if tar really is good for your magura pads. Please let me know.ThanksAndrew Very commonly asked question.Tar is effective but not ideal if you: Have a smooth rim and you ONLY EVER ride in the dry. Tar is shocking if you are ever planning to ride in the wet. What you really want is a grind (which is when your wheel is grinded with an angre grinder to create a rough surface with some harder compound pads specifically designed for a grind eg Koxx Browns, Rock Blues (found on Tarty Bikes))Phil
Ladd
Tar on my rear rim works fine wet and dry it is grinded but a mate has a small bit of tar on his front smooth rim and its beast
Muel
I used to use tar, it was always shit.I did bite well, but the hold was shit, when it got wet it was shit, it comes off and goes all over your frame and is gay to get off, if you put too little on, it doesn't work, too much and it sticks on.Grind it. Scott Norman
i always use tar in wet and dry, it works a beast on my front rim and ok on my back fim but also my back rim is ground so i say grind your back rim and only use tar if you dont think its holding verry well. scott
max-t
To be totally honest in my experiance and a few mates tar is total crap. Yes it makes your brake bitey to a certain extent but,1) It doesn't work in the wet2) It doesn't work in the cold3) You have to keep applying it4) It makes your brake stick rarther than using friction (like a grind does) to stop it from moving and sometimes this can be a problem.5) It's not as good as a grind. squeaky
i found that it was very good in the dry but i found that it was rubbish in the wet
trials_noir
i tryed tar and hairspray... it works but nothing beats a grinded rim, the grind lasts longet, it works in the wet and dry weather and it is not messy like tar.i use a soft pad on my grinded rim which wears the pads a bit quicker but the grined lasts longer unlike using a harder pad which wears the grined on the rim and the rim.hope it helps you out. Tamnessâ„¢
Just grind your rims. Tar is too messy and can easily go wrong
Skoze
As has been said above, tar is shite. All it can offer in the dry is a fairly good hold/ bite and some noise. The downsides are that:When it gets wet, it turns to oil, makes a mess. It has to be constantly re-applied.VERY tempremental, too little and it offers no real advantage, too much and it clogs the pads up, makes the rim horrible and the brake pads get stuck to the wheel when you brakeJust generally not worth the hassle. And now, i will do my usual of defending the rims from the evils of angle grinder, just buy some soft compound pads (i.e zoo's) and make sure that the rim stays clean.Matt
Headley
I find tar works alrite on my smooth rims, although a rim grind would be better. Whatever you do dont use tar in wet conditions.

AshleyB
tar is good but grind is the future but if you put them both together its graet wet or dry it works
danny l
heyyIf you are going to use tar you need to regularly clean off all the old tarand clean your pads because it gets clogged up easily. But seriously a grind is sooooo much better!! Revolver
i had tar once and it was goodbut nothing beats a f**king good bleed and setup for your maguraand a grind, although i've not ridden with one myself, i can see how it works better than tartar also makes your brake stupidly loudso if you have tar, don't go downhill
t-mag boi
Hi there. I would go for a rim with a grind but if you can't get one then i would use tar because it makes the brake a wee bit better and gives it a better hold.Michael Riding a T-magHi there.
