anzo
Afternoon all,As I notice I'm starting to get a little unfit...I need to get back into shape.I'm not into all the weight lifting, jogging, gym bollocks; too much for posers So, taking advantage of the near by Derbyshire countryside, me and a friend have decided to buy into cross country cycling. Easy, fun and kinda cheap. So, we have about 200-300 to spend on a bike. Must be pretty good spec, nice in looks (above all - hate ugly bikes), discs and front sus if possible. I've never bought one before so don't really know what to look for? This will be used a lot, and most probably used to throw myself down some hills occasionally. Looked at DH bikes, look the dogs, but look very impractical for distance. Also the prices of XC bikes are a piss take! Looked in a few bike shops and most are stupidly priced. Also, looked in halfords as a starting point, nothing really exciting in there.Or even a freeride bike thats nice to ride for a bit of distance. Any advice for me? Edited January 31, 2008 by anzo
Tomm
Someone I know is selling this, any use to you?In my now familiar position as the missing link between the NUMB (Newcastle Uni Mountain Bikers) and Team Sperm a friend of mine from the uni days is sellling a bike... He says: "Its a 17 inch 2007 merlin malt 1 frame with a full lx groupset (dual control) including wheels with mavic rims, marzocchi mx comp forks and fsa finishing kit. Its 14 months old and been looked after very well. I think it weighs 28.5lbs. Let me know if you need any other details" It is the crome type frame like this one but not the same build http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=product&...;categoryId=100 It has hydraulic disks as well but i am not 100% which ones... i think they are probably deore but may be LX... He rides like a bit of a fanny so it is in good knick... and i have a photo or two if you want me to email them to you. Looking for £340ish but i suspect he may take a tad less....? Any interest? anzo
Thanks Tom I'll keep that in mind; though ideally I want to buy two bikes at the same time. Simply because hes lazy and I don't want to spend money on my bike and then him drop out the day after...if you catch my drift.Although if you could PM me an email address or something then I'll make note of it Thanks. Muel
I ride in the peaks most weekends...Sweet, I'm currently undergoing negotiations over borrowing his bike, he never uses it any more. What sort of level are you? I doubt I could do more than 20 miles in a day, I'm really unfit as well now.

Muel
That would be true, which is why it's not my postcode, it's the one where my old school is. Yes, I memorised it, I have used it many times to give out on the internet.

Gavyn.
carrera banshee, i've got one it's bloody ace fun. a bit too heavy for serious xc and a bit more than your budget but well worth the extra cash.
JonMack
maps.google.co.uk a full postcode points to the house... well it does with mine which is... only jesting! It points to an area in which those houses share the same post code. Each house doesn't have a separate post code, your next door neighbours and the people across the street from you all have the same postcode. It's usually about 10-15 houses or so that share one. anzo
Where abouts in the Shire are you dude?I'm down heanor way. If you don't know it its near Matlock (15 minute or so drive), kinda near Mansfield and on the outskirts of Nottingham. I mostly ride Notts though.Obviously with a XC bike it will be Peak District How much would I be looking at for a 'reasonable' cheap DH bike? I know its not ideal at all for XC, but chances are I'll end up flying downhills one way or another? Edited February 1, 2008 by anzo
Muel
You can get last year model Kona's pretty cheap in the back of MBUK?Like the Coiler, Dawg, Stinky etc, you could pick the best one for you, weight vs hill climbing ability. Or places any good for trials, appart from Bracken rocks. Cheers.
Tomm
I ride in the bit near Manchester mostly - so around Edale/Hayfield/New Mills/Ladybower. You can park anywhere around there without any problems. Edale station car parkNew Mills co-op car parkThe problem is finding decent routes though. There are hundreds of bridleways but some are good, some are bad - are some are only good in certain directions. Best way is to go with someone who knows where they're going, or get a route online somewhere. That's not very near Derby I know. As for trials, I don't really know either.
