Is My Mono A 'gonner'?

Have a hope mono Ti on the rear. Ratchet appears fine, springs fine and pawls look fine.

HOWEVER when if I kick hard instead of the hub skipping the pedal moves down and the freehub just rotates. I would understand if the ratchet was worn so the pawls had nothing to grap onto but if that was the case it would make a horrible noise and jerk downwards (like a huge skip) but this doesn't happen. I can ride normally if I press softly on the pedals but when I kick it smoothly and slowly rotates the freehub and doesn't engage the wheel. But it still find the engagement points as it clicks just as loud.

Conffusing :S

Anyone offer some technical advice please?

Phil

Is the ratchet rotating inside the hub shell when you pedal hard? Maybe mark a point on the ratchet and mark a point on the hub an then try an force the freehub to rotate. You'll be able to see that the ratchets moved round from the point you marked inside the hub body, I don't have a clue how a Mono's put together but it sounds like the ratchet is threaded into the hub shell and the ratchet has stripped the threads from the hub shell out with hard you pedalling. As I said I'm not totally familiar with those hubs, but it definitely sounds like somethings stripped threads somewhere.

could be, but i think the drive ring is splined? (might be wrong?)

could also be caused by a bent / snaped axel...

Isn't the drive ring had a loo kfor that it's definetly the whole freehub moving and the axle appeared ok when I took the freehub off (well it didn't collapse)

Aha good thinking. I seriously reacon it could be the ratchet rotating due to how constant the speed it moves is. Will have to experiment tomorrow.

If the worst comes to the worst does anyone know if a pro2 is the same hub shell size as the mono, by this I mean will the same spokes and same rim work with a pro2?

Cheers all, Phil

Pritty sure it sounds like the ratchet is striped. The only way to fix it is a new hub shell as you cant get a new racket ring speerate as there threaded in and then glued i think. try hope they may have some spares still from when they stopped making them.

If its anything like that, where the ratchet appears to be screwed into the hub shell. Then you can only assume that you've stripped the threads out of the hub shell. It explains why you can pedal lightly but hard pedaling makes it spin because your stripping the threads even more. Can only be certain by taking it all apart an having a good look inside.

Yeah looks most likely. I don't see why I couldn't open it all up prise it out and try glueing it down like hell.

I think at some point I have to accept my mono won't live forever and a pro 2 might be wise (N) (however devertating it is on the wallet)

if the axle is bent then that would explain all of this...if the drive ring and pawls seem ok a bent axel could lead to the not engaging squarely...see what i mean?

I hear you but if it was not engaging squarely the pawls would skip over the ratchet and it would skip, at the moment all engagement is being kept and it is just turning smoothly so I think it has to be the ratchet spinning.

Yeah you mean the pawls wont sit into the hub properly, so they'll be at an angle to the ratchet? If you do mean that, it doesn't really explain why he only gets slipping when he pedals hard an not soft.

Also i would imagine that it would make a noise similar to the hub skipping.

Pro 2 (Y) I wouldnt realllyyy trust my face with some superglue in my hub.

Haha I agree but £130 seems extortionate!

One of these things that jsut has to be done Iguess........

If your going to fix it and it has threaded, then your only going to need the a new hub shell. I'm pretty sure with the ratchet being steel, that it's going to be the hub shell thats had its threads stripped out. New hub shell an bobs your uncle, time to give Hope a call.

Right I'll further investigate tomorrow maybe get some pictures and then contact hope. Phone or email advised?

Would be awesome to get it working, got a 07 echo laying around but for the hub, spokes and a wheelbuild looking in the region of £170 which does not seem reasonable atall, more than I got my frame for!

Phone is definitely best. It sounds very much like the thread which holds the ratchet into the hub has stripped.

Hope are a great company, I am pretty sure they will help out in some way. Explain the problem and see what they say :)

Right guys thanks for all your advice was helpful.

I phoned Hope and they said its quite rare for it to happen but if I send it in and that is the problem they will sort it out, brilliant customer care! I can safely say hope will be my lifetime company of choice for hubs.

Anyway its taken an hour and a half to build a bullet proof box but I'm there!
