rsmith
Hi all.I am new to trials and are in the process of building a bike. I've just bought a pair of Magura rim brakes, (retro yellow).I know it's too late to change my mind now but I was just wondering why you guys prefer these brakes to a pair of the many disk brakes available. I can't get a real answer from any of my mates. Also why is it that some prefer to run a disk on the front?Any info would be useful. Thanks, Rob
Alex Dark
Basically disc up front is preferred because it offers all weather stopping, with high power and modulation. A magura up front normally cannot rival this power without being grabby a(and usually savagely noisy ). With hard pads and smooth rim, the magura will give th same amount of modulation but offer less power. Most trials ridders still run a maggie on the back due to the positive on / off feel some say that disc simply cannot achieve. I personally run maguras front ( on a smooth rim )and back ( with a grind ) as i like the modulation on the front, and dont really need the extra power. Im running a set of racelines, and love them. most people will agree that hs33s from this era are far better than the 05 onwards due to a far better TPA (Turbo pad adjuster ) design and sturdier bar clamp. For a list of good pads, check the pads revioew section in Trials chat. Watch out for it, because mine crossthreaded and i can't use it any more. People use hs33s at the back because modulation isn't as necessary on the back, but a brake that's reliable is. Rim brakes stop the rim, whereas disc brakes stopo the disc, but a disc is only designed to be stopped in a forwards rotation, and not backwards such as in a backhop. This means there's a small chance the disc could rip off.
sam ere luvin :Ptrials:P
hi there, from were i live i have to go down a really big hill to get to the nearest decent riding spot, this is were front disk comes in use. but then again front magura if set up right is a guarantied lock brake which is useful for a lot of things so i would double magura. also if you are right foot forward and you run double disc there is a lot to small up and bend in a messed up side hop. hope this helps Sam x
Ladd
Personally i think the 04 magura's are better than 05's even if the tpa breaks you can replace it with a bolt the 05 ones you have to buy a new tpa lol and the lever on the 04 feels nicer

Muel
http://www.trials-forum.co.uk/forum/index....=100632&hl=That should tell you all about how to grind. You Grind your rim to put deep cuts in to the braking surface, so the pads have more purchase on the surface, which makes your brake work much better and produces that horrid noise everyone else loves.
