Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if anybody here has dreadlocks as I'm thinknig about having them,so I wanted to ask how did you go about 'doing/getting' them, and how do you maintain them?

I'd of posted it in random small questions but my posts seem to get ignored in there.

Thanks

Dave are you turning totally insane ?

Your hair is fit. Dreadlocks are for the safe safe black gangster wanna' be's innit.

Your emo and loveable.

Don't change that. :)

Danny.

I am, I have pieces of metal in my eye brow and lip and a big thing in my ear. I totally agree my hair is fit (H) but I'm fancying dreads, I reckon if I get dreads I'll look just like bob marley (I'd actually like to have them as long as his) I'm not so sure that blonde dreads will work too good (the guy on bad boys 2 for example) but yes if you know anybody who has dreads (or if you yourself have dreads) I'm asking on here rather than google because I wanna hear it from somebody who actually has them.

Thankk yooooooooou (Y)

P.S They'll probably look shit because my hair is too short and I'm white, but I'll try :)

Edit: Meteor I get some right funny looks when I tell people I straighten my hair lol, arses to them, they gel theirs so why can't I straighten mine 8-) lol.

i dont think you could hack dreads, they hurt

Worth it in the end though (Y), I'm having them no matter how much it's gonna hurt lol, just that once I have them if I decided I didn't like them I'd have to cut all my hair off :(.

Skinheads are ace. They take absolutely no effort to maintain. Also keeps your head cool.

My hair was shit long untill the other day when my hair f**ked up at the hairdressers, so i shaved it all off.

Feel like i've gone back 3 years.

Gotta grow it again now :(

Takes forever.

Danny.

I've been dreading mine for months now =)

If you haven't got the hair of a black person it will take a fair bit longer but the result is just as good

Its best if you get a mate to do it, basically you section off hair in equal sizes, more hair for a fatter dread... and comb (best it the teeth are close together) towards your head and itll knot up, Once done, tieing a small rubber band around the base of it helps.

it'll start to resemble dreads, but won't look quite right untill they've matured for a couple of weeks or so, it is a long process but after a year they will look the shit

I'd advise strongly not to use wax as it is a bit skanky (maybe a little if you hairs dead straight)

Try not to wash your hair for about a week after it's been done, after that, wash them whenever, just ease off so they don't come apart. It is a common mistake for people to think you don't wash your hair atall but it will help the process

But I avoided all that shit just waited until my hair matted naturally, which takes f**king agesss

I had a few dreads in my hair back in the surfer days.

Had semi-natural ones lol, didn't wash my hair for a month or two then parts of it started knotting together. Used a bit of wax and a comb to exaggerate the knot.

Because I was always in the sea, the salt water naturally tightened the dreads.

They can look cool on some people but look DREADfull on others.

Oh yeh, getting it professionally done in a salon (the best way) is really expensive.

You gotta really commit to having them done but can be worth it in the end.

PS once you have them/trying to get them, dont use conditioner!!! it softens your hair and starts to loosen the knots.

Thanks for the help guys (Y) Going to get my girlfriend to do it for me as she knows more about them than me. So will I be looking like a tit for nearly a year with my hair in elastic bands?

Thanks again.

If you want them looking good, it's a LOT of work, Palm tolling etc, go on dreadheadhq.com, for products, tips, pictures, everything. I had them for two years, couldn't be arsed to maintain them, they looked shit. For people who think they are 'dirty' they have to be cleaned a lot. Greasy hair doesn't matt, they have to be clean in order to be good dreads basically, it's just that residues from normal shampoos untie them. So look into what shampoo's you can and can't use. (Look on dreadhead) I would personally say don't get them. You just get treated differently and judged, it's not worth it I don't think. At least take your time and think about it. IF you get them, for goodness sake take care of them! Then it's more socially acceptable. Be prepared too hear ' Look it's Bob Marley, haha ' every day that you have dreads, everyone who says it thinks they are funny and don't realise that you have heard it 100's of times.

i'll post up a bit more in a bit, but please let me clarify

dreadlocks only smell because people don't wash their hair, just like people without dreadlocks, their hair will smell too if unwashed.

True that - I only say that because twice now in uni i've sat next to different dudes with dreads and they've both stunk of shite.

filthy hippies.

i mean little criticism in this, but that attitude is along the lines of 'i saw a black man steal something, all of them must be the same'

however most people with dreadlocks are filthy hippies and thus, don't wash.

Thanks a lot, that website is mint and to be honest all the people I've seen with dreads/that I've been sat by haven't looked dirty or smelt but then again they aren't too common in stoke really.

Thanks for the advice and stuff everyone (Y). I'll update at a later date as to what I decide to do.
