Can We Nominate People ?

Alex Dark

Recommended Posts

Saw the 'Use the report button...' replies from Rich and Tomm and thought - ah sweet.

Quickly went to NMC, read a few threads, and thought - oh, forgot its full or idiots. I used to laugh but now it sort of makes me upset that then can be so stupid and inflict it on everybody else on the forum.

What i want to know is can we nominate people to return to NMC? Theres a few on my list...

Edit: haha Pete Wright anyone?

I think that some of the younger riders should be allowed to become full members for the simple reasons that some of the younger riders bring up more valid points than some of the full members that are on here now. Also it takes to long for some new members to become full members because of there spelling and use of the english language however i can't remember the last time i saw someone get graided for their use of puntuation and grammer and spelling on the forum, we ride bikes not write novels...... i think that is so petty and pathetic. as long as the post passes the point across without being stupidly childish or abreviated then people should be allowed to post in full members.

People that start petty sarcastic arguments should be warned also, if they having got anything good to say they should keep it shut! Sorry to have a rant but sometimes it seems like i open topics where people want genuine info and they just get sarcy replies and that gets my back up as well.

thats my 10p's worth anyway cheers peeps :)

Fair point about the spelling and grammar Danny. Though I, and many others at a guess have simply clicked 'Back' when they read the first sentence of some topics. Theres nothing more annoying than trying to understand what people are trying to say.

Of course, there are exceptions with riders from other countries...but usually they type far better than the majority from England. Text talk is simply annoying; its been an issue before with people pulling the dyslexia card because they put 'u' instead of 'you'...utter bollocks.

In my opinion, for what its worth, there needs to be more strict measures in place for poorly structured posts...perhaps penalties, 24 hour bans or something?

As a general rule of thumb, if they're not going to but the effort in making a topic, I'm not going to put the effort into replying.

I don't ever want to be anything more than 'member'. I worked hard to get these pips and i don't want them coverd by some shitty 'senior' bar.

Haha! Well said JT! I'm just gona stick with what I've always done, an reported people if they're worth being validated. It works, the mods have said it works and if they get over run with running the forum, they apoint a new mod to help them out. Take Tomm for example.

All valid points. The NMC system works on people who's posts make an impact, but the problem is that this relies on either someone reporting you as worthy for validation (which will hopefully happen more) or a mod seeing the posts and thinking "Hmmm, worthy of validation I think..."

The age of the rider isn't an issue, it's the quality of their posting. If people are making useful posts, and being a positive influence, then they should be full members. We don't need extra people who will just reply with "yeah", "me too", or "+1" all the time. We have enough of those already :)

The whole thing with spelling, punctuation and grammar isn't that we're expecting perfectly written posts, but in the past there have been some that have been next to unreadable. Truely, truely horrible. It's about context. The forum only exists in the written word, so is it really unfair to expect the people using it to put some effort in? In the words of a flyer I was given once "You make the effort, we'll make the effort."

I also agree with the petty, scarcastic and argumentative posts. Moderators keep their activities pretty low profile as this is a place for free expression and exchange of ideas... To a point. Posts and threads do get deleted, and threads locked when people start having conversations between each other which have no bearing on the thread taking place. The fact that people don't notice a lot of the time really shows we're doing our job here.

At the end of the day, this is something the whole forum can contribute to. There is a report button, use it. Register what your objections are, and it'll help the whole mod team to try and keep everyone happy. Everyone giving a little time to do that will make the forum better for everyone.

In case you didn't realise though, being 'Senior' isn't really anything to do with how long you've been around.

Just a cautionary note about the reporting - please don't abuse the system and nominate your mates or people that don't make the effort. If everyone nominates everyone, then we're in a bad place and it's no easier to filter out the good ones than it is now. And we'll have a moderator console full of crap so we can't see the other important things that're in there (genuine reports about spam/ flaming etc).

I reckon being senior should be to do with your post count as well. Like JT said, he's been around the forum for ages and i can't remember him ever being a dick to other members. He's always helpful and polite and has obviously been around here for a long while to rack up that post count.

I think it should be something along the lines of get to a certain amount (really high obviously) and then you get put up for nomination of being a senior member, maybe hold a simple yes or no vote in chit chat or something?

Senior membership isn't something that's automatic, it's just based on what existing senior members think and what the forum needs. Someone who'd really make a difference could have posted 100 times, where as someone who's spamming the forum and has 1000 posts could not. It could just be that there's no reason for making anyone a senior member at that time.

But senior Members don't exactly have anymore privs than normal members. Apart from they've got there own forum.

Danny.

NMC moderators? Then it saves the hassle of the other mod dudes doing it.

If we was to have NMC mod's

I would vote:

lawnmowerman

thescientist

krisboats

Very possitive honest members of the forum and would suit the job great and mike dont say you wont suit the job because you will:D.

Senior membership isnt to do with the amount of posts its mainly to do with how helpful you can be. Those 3 names i picked are probably the most helpful guys on the forum.

Don't mean to be funny but I've seen those two taking the piss in NMC and making things worse. Fair enough those guys wouldn't take any shit, but I'm not convinced that's what NMC needs. The NMC forum isn't a place for full members to go and vent their anger at poor grammar or whatever - that's not a very nice welcome to an (overall) pretty friendly forum. In the end it would be up to Tom/Danny though.

Do you think that NMC needs moderating more?

I very much doubt there will be any new moderators who aren't SMs already.

But shouldn't it be named "important", "useful" or "elite" member then as opposed to senior, as they haven't been around on the forum for ages making posts regularly, if they have made 100 posts they aren't a senior member, they're helpful. I don't think the term "senior" member fits really, and its something i've never really understood the naming for. I guess i'd just imagined a senior as someone who'd been around for a long time, same as the way the term senior person is used in real life.

Honestly, i think it needs something. Theres frequently members who miss validation despite being completely worthy of it and as the forums popularity is still increasing there'll be more and more new members which makes it harder for you guys. I'm not trying to say your doing a bad job at the minute, but i'm sure you can appreciate how much help a couple of NMC specific mods would be.

Like I said before, and as Tomm pointed out I really am not good with the newbies.

Half of them are illiterate and rude if you try and correct their mistakes.

It would be a mistake to make me mod of the NM area!

The whole validation thing works now there's more mods available to do it.

It only used to be danny and tom who were able to do it!

The problem with the classifieds section needs more doing to it than the whole new members system.

Perhaps, but that's just semantics. For what it's worth, I think the term 'senior member' is fine - I'm sure senior can mean 'above' rather than simply older. Most of the SMs are older than 20 though - go figure.

Sorry, I realise that maybe came across sounding a bit harsh. I didn't mean it as an insult at all - just that some people tend to get annoyed easier than others.

How can we make the classifieds bit better? Preferably without making changes to the actual forum software... You can report bumps, I'll edit an earlier post and delete the bump ;)

Just for reference (would probably help more if I posted this in NMC) but heres the system we have for validating members. When you click the validate button it sends them an email letting them know..

This person got validated

But not this one..
