Will Arnold
i think global warming only really becomes and issue when the uk starts to get the kinds of climate expected at our latitude! i.e. freakin cold! my view is that everything that we create or do to help keep our effects on global warming to a minimum, deducts from the quality of life we lead, for example less powerful machinery, tighter building reg's, tighter business reg's...so the option for me is either :live life without worry (and cause my share of damage to the environment [which in my opinion is negligable])orto live life with certain aspects of my life limited ( and cause less damage to the environment [which may be worth doing, but in the same case may not be worth doing. without proof, WHO KNOWS?])
Alex.loves.boys
Wthe ice caps actualy go under water dont they?so when they melt they just fill the gap where the ice cube?this emans no rising suerly?we did an expeirment in school which showed this..dont anyone have ago at me if im rong though Edited January 15, 2008 by alext

It's not just melting that will cause rise in seas as the oceans will heat up too, effectively increasing their volume.
Skoze
floating ice will still have an area above water.Ah but the weight of that above water will be displacing the water around it, so when it melts, no change to sea levels! i totally agree about the stuff on land, but most of it is in the water. And since when does water get bigger when it gets hot? Boswell
All you lot saying that the UK will get warmer are talking rubbish! I heard that there is a warm current called the Gulf of Mexico stream that passes past our country in the winter and stops our country from getting seriously cold. If global warming causes enough fresh (non salt) water to enter the sea from melting ice this stream will stop and the big freeze will begin. Sneakers O'Toole
So if the Uk gets colder, and the polar bears homes in the north melt we could theoretically have polar bear racing coming to the uk soon? Brilliant!

N.Wood
On a similar note, we will be reaching peak production of oil between 2012 and 2022. We currently produce around 83 million barrels of oil PER DAY.2.5 years ago it cost around 13USD to buy a barrel of oil. Today it costs around 100USD.I'm sored so i wrote this for you all to enjoy. ManxTrialSpaz
One point. I do believe that the majority of the rising sea levels was due to the seas heating up and the water expanding. Granted, this expansion would be tiny at a small volume of water, but when you take into account that the sea is very fvcking big, a tiny change in sea temperatures would result in a large rise of sea levels. One point though. If global warming ahs been happening for a long time now, its just that its only recently been brought up, this means sea levels should have been rising for a while? How come the places that are below sea level, aren't already below the sea?
N.Wood
Well yeah, it is...But remember petrol is only a portion of what oil gets made into. Plastics, chemicals etc are all massive players in oil use. The price of domestic gas is set to go up by 25% very soon...

Dan6061
Ice cube theory...Thing is, the ice caps that will melt are above sea level, so it'll be the same as having water with ice cubes at the rim of the glass, but half the ice cube sticking out the top. Then when it melts, the water will flow over top of the glass... Like when you get in a bath, if you were to fill it up as you were sat up in it, and filled it to the top, when you lay down/go underwater, it'll spill over the edge.Isn't that kinda the same as the ice caps melting? and how the seas will rise...
