Heatsink
The bashguard (or spider, onto which the bashguard is mounted) has an internal saw tooth type shape which slides onto a matching form on the cranks, and a lockring holds it on. Middleburn call this rounded saw tooth shape the "Sweet torque" spline pattern. In the PDF below you can see a step-by-step guide that I wrote to removing the bashguard, with plenty of photos. This should more than answer your questions I hope, including tools required and the method.http://www.heatsinkbikes.com/content/Bashguard/bashguide.pdfSteve

Alec
Hi there,Your local bike shop should have the tool because it's the same pattern as a shimano item used on older cranks before 2pc and even before octalink. If you're mates with them pop in and I'm sure they'll lend it you or hook you up.peace

Daniel Gray
Vice and a hammer will get the lock ring off, and it wont damage it if your carefull. Bit of WD40 helps to .

Bit of WD40 helps to .Quite right, there's no reason why you can't tap the lockring off with a hammer and punch whilst holding your crank arm in a vice with a cloth wrapped round it. Just be careful, it's easy enough.
