Pashley26
Dude, you said all you want to do is Type stuff, and mess about with Music, Video's, Photo's and general Media....This is what a Mac is designed to do ! Why buy a Camera phone when what you really want is a Digital SLR ? I had always used Windows, but since i switched to mac i can do loads more stuff....It's great ! And it hasn't broken ! Janson
osx is a foam-padded linux. it's great.my macbook has been good to me since i bought it in late august 2006. it's a bit slower now than it first was, due to me filling the hdd with shite. i have had no problems with any of my other things like external hdd, cameras, midi interfaces or anything. i miss windows for some things that i used frequently before, but generally speaking, i'm happy. the batch of macbooks which mine came from has a hdd prone to failing, so i might get it replaced in a bit, but it's been fine so far... Greetings
How about getting a VBI platform? You can configure most of the components yourself and it's much cheaper than a branded laptop. I'm pretty sure you can get these in the UK, it seems to be a worldwide Intel initiative. Got myself one of these laptops a few weeks ago, it was really cheap considering it's spec, it's well built and one can upgrade it like a normal PC. Why, what would you do with it that would be useful? Browse the internet and make up more rumours about how you know who the stig is?I'd rather buy a base mac then upgrade the RAM and HDD's myself, would be lots cheaper and more fun. Tomm
Random question: Have any of you mac lot had to do any warranty claims?Only with my iPod (Got a brand new one no-questions-asked on the very last day of the warranty ).For my laptop, the other thing is that there was a battery recall when Sony recalled nearly all of its batteries (apple batteries are/were made by Sony). But all that meant was that I got a new free battery out of it (kept the old one as a spare).
JonMack
I claimed on my warranty for a dying hard drive. Took it to an Apple store and they replaced it and fixed the few other things that were up with it. Also claimed for a dead power adaptor and they replaced it no problem. Also claimed for a dead iPod 3 years ago which I landed on skating, got a replacement in 2 days.Generally Apple are sh*t hot for replacing stuff, but contacting them is a ball bag, cos they're all f**king foreign and don't understand english. Ever heard of Logic Pro 8 Gold with jam packs... it equals god of some sort.Anyway, back to the main point.I'll still say, if you can afford a mac, get one. If you need a windows program, you can always get an Emulator.
Krisboats
but, i think the biggest reason to go for the mac is the operating system. thats the reason i switched, xp is getting a bit old and crappy and vista is just unbelievably bad.I'd love to know why exactly? If your on a budget and you want it future proofed so its physically capable for a little while go for a low branded pc laptop (acer, compaq etc). If its the sort of thing your going to be carrying around while you do photography type things at photoshoots and your going to be using it to show the images get a mac. But if your not sure you want to buy a budget brand the choice becomes a bit harder. The reason i say this is because while a pc desktop is a much better saving than the equivalent mac, the laptop market for both put a fair premium on the things. So going for a sony vaio or a macbook is about the same, so its just a case of which one you like more. As joe said, some of the dell business laptops really are amazing value so thats definately something to look at.The reason behind the photo shoots scenario is because the subjects and people your doing the shoot for will probably be more impressed because they automatically think macs are professional (yes, due to those crap "i'm a mac..." adverts). At the end of the day a sleek clean looking machine that may or may not be as good as a windows based machine might be the final thing that sways your narrow minded clents opinion. Macs are largely fashion over function as well so you'll find the higher price has gone into making the thing more compact and lighter, rather than big heavy and better specc'd like a budget pc laptop. Also, i would definately say go with vista rather than XP. The connectivity and driver installation system is far better, and as you'll be plugging things in and out of the laptop all the time that'll be a real help. Laptops are also generally used for a narrower range of things, word processing, emails, photos etc so the vista prefetching will learn how you use it and speed up the loading times of those things appropriately.Or you could upgrade it with a faster processor, faster, bigger hard drive, over priced Apple RAM, and a 1920x1200 display:Are they still sticking kingston value ram in them and passing it off as their own? Krisboats
Bollocks So the glowing apple on the top of the laptops is a better way to spend money than say, a card reader? Apples main selling point is the fashion aspect, the adverts just re-inforce the idea. Apple use their machines to appeal to games designers or 3d rendering stuff? Pretty sure people like poopipe in his line of work use pc's rather than macs. Edited January 9, 2008 by Krisboats

Tomm
Do you REALLY think that? No one buys a computer because it makes them look cool. Actually there are some dickheads somewhere that might, but most people wouldn't. I know the impression of Mac users can be of some self-righteous fool trying to 'convert' people, but that's definitely the minority and you're daft to assume they're the only people who buy Macs. People buy them because they're easy and friendly to use, and more importantly they're nice to use. If that sort of thing appeals, go and buy one. If not, move along. The glowy Apple thing is quite cool and it doesn't affect the computer in any way. I refuse to believe it costs Apple an awful lot to cut a hole in the back for the light to shine through. So why not? It's the same attention to detail that's in loads of places on Mac hardware and in OS X. I guess a card reader might be good, but I've got one in the drawer right next to me so it's not a big deal for me.

I guess a card reader might be good, but I've got one in the drawer right next to me so it's not a big deal for me.Where did i say the majority of people buy them to look cool? I said apple campaign and focus on fashion with their products sometimes more than they do function. You don't see mac adverts showing off the specs of it, you see them showing off how much cooler they are than windows. I said if your doing photography it could be a deciding factor pulling out a smart sleek macbook or pulling out a generic black plastic windows machine, especially if the hardware between the two is about the same... along with the price. The only reason i say it is because my friend bought her mac for that exact reason and pretty much for that reason alone, she was determined to get a mac because when she does photo stuff she's literally trying to sell an image, and at a fashion shoot the image counts for everything.Technically, the glowy apple thing is marginally sapping battery power for no functional gain, but that IS just nitpicking. Surely its just as easy to cut a hole in and stick a card reader in the side? What if you forget the card reader one day? What if the card your trying to read has something really important on it like the plans for the cure of cancer but you can't read it because apple thought they'd rather help you see 4 inches further in the dark (intermittently as it pulses) ......obviously i'm exagerating and having a laugh, but still. Theres always the chance that it could happen Edited January 9, 2008 by Krisboats

It also doesnt pulse, that's only the sleep light that pulses, to let you know it's asleep.Card reader? I'll stick one in my ExpressCard slot on the side of my computer.
