gussie
As the title says, what makes brake pads so good? What is considered the best substance to make them of? I have no clue and i know the heatsink reds are said to be amazing. I know the hold, wear and loudness have something to do with it. Or is that all there is to do with it.gus. Adam-Griffin
Pad's are mainly made out of a substance called polyurathane---http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PolyurethaneAnd rear disk's can crack frame's, but don't always.Edit:Link didn't work, try this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyurethane Edited January 4, 2008 by Adam-Griffin
Alex Dark
I have another question, what do rear disks do to frames? Actually two, What is modulation?gusQ: "what do rear disks do to frames?"A: Err, in the shoddier designed frames a rear disk can break them?Q: "two, What is modulation?"A: Modulation is basically the slowing down effect of brakes, the more modulation in a brake, the less likely they are to lock up.e.g, An hs33 with Plazmatics, a really savage grind, and a really good booster would give you little or no modulation, the brake would feel very off and on...perfect for a trials rear brake... however an hs33 with, say, koolstops, an ok booster and no grind would mdulate and slow you down really well....and wouldn't be very grabby...perfect for manuals and stoppies
steve@banbury-trials
the grade of rubber alters the qualities of brake pads, same goes with tyres.softer compound pads like zoo!s are generally used with smooth rims as they wear down too much with a grind.harder compound pads like koxx browns are used on harsh grinds as they were out slower.steve

gussie
Thanks people. Ok one last question what do the cnc'd backings do? Do the normal plastic backings bend? Do they affect braking power/feel?Actually three but on the same topic gus
N Roach
Thanks people. Ok one last question what do the cnc'd backings do? Do the normal plastic backings bend? Do they affect braking power/feel?Actually three but on the same topic gusCnc backings improve the proformance of the brake because there is no flex in the pad backings or the componud. Although these backings do vade warranty on magura brakes. Yes the normal plastic backings do bend after some of the pad is worn away. Also the Cnc Backings make the brake feel more solid on the lever. That should help you.Nathan Edited January 4, 2008 by Koxx_Nath.C
