If the chain tension is ok then I guess there's no need for the tensioner. I use a mech hanger which has bin cut and had the actual hanger part removed, I only use this as a spacer :). I wouldn't suggest doing this though, keep your mech hanger handy so you can put a tensioner back on when the chain stretches.

i'm sure it depends on the frame...but alot of mech hangars appear to support the dropout making it an integral part of the frame...

so if you'v got one, you may as well use it really...

thats the sort of thing i was thinking

It is always good to run a mech hanger but if you want to run a tensioner you can always run one behind the bb , or just buy a mech hanger and get a proper tensioner.

i dont need a mech or a tensioner

im not going to be using anything, just wondered if u should still use one for strength or if the dropout weakens if you dont have one

I don't think the dropout weakens or anything like that - a lump of very soft aluminium isn't going to provide much structural support. But you might not be able to clamp the QR/axle properly if you take it off - hence the need for a broken hanger.

see, thats what i thought, but on my base i ran it hangerless for a week and within that small time the dropout stretched and my wheel moved about feckloads :( unsurprisingly by fitting a mech hanger, my troubles were over :P so yeah, run one or a snapped one (Y)
