MadManMike
Nope you don't need to, I ran one chainring on my DMR without the mech hanger or mech...You've just gotta get lucky and hope the chain doesn't go loose

JoNnY__Mc
If the chain tension is ok then I guess there's no need for the tensioner. I use a mech hanger which has bin cut and had the actual hanger part removed, I only use this as a spacer . I wouldn't suggest doing this though, keep your mech hanger handy so you can put a tensioner back on when the chain stretches.

steve@banbury-trials
i remeber seeing pics of folk having there hub bolts sandwicheing (sp) their tensioner to their frame,so they didnt need a mech hanger.steve
Vee
nah tensions good with half link so just wondered if u needed a hanger
Bionic Balls
i'm sure it depends on the frame...but alot of mech hangars appear to support the dropout making it an integral part of the frame...so if you'v got one, you may as well use it really... Ash-Kennard
use a snapped one if you must...
Ladd
It is always good to run a mech hanger but if you want to run a tensioner you can always run one behind the bb , or just buy a mech hanger and get a proper tensioner.

Tomm
I don't think the dropout weakens or anything like that - a lump of very soft aluminium isn't going to provide much structural support. But you might not be able to clamp the QR/axle properly if you take it off - hence the need for a broken hanger.
