I dont want to start this dibate on yet another forum... but buying a copy of photoshop doesnt make you any better at using it than downloading it.

Can people stop assuming they are somehow more talented because they bought a copy.

True, but you would have a manual...

Why don't people use Photoshop Elements first? Or something similar? Photoshop is a complete pain in the arse to use until you're upto speed (and even then it's less than intuitive!) but people try to use it 'because it's photoshop'.

Anyway, don't bother with on-line tutorials if you have no background in Photoshop. Buy a good book.

disagree, play around with the tools, press all the buttons and even use the filters, follow some online tutorials and you'll get an understanding of how you can manipulate things to suit what you want, I dont think a book will teach you any more than an hour or two following some tutorials..

Just play around, see if you can make something cool... Brushes are definatly a key area though!

I learnt all my photoshop skills ( :ermm: ) from online tutorials. Just do a few and you'll learn all the different techniques that make up photoshop - whether or not the tutorial itself is relevant to what you actually want to do.

That depends. I really only use Photoshop for photo editing, not design or anything, and the only brush I use is a standard round one for using masks etc.

I can tell I'm talented cos other people pay for my copy :P

and ... using tutorials or a manual makes you a shit load better at a package a shit load quicker than banging your head against it with no instructions.

I challenge you to build and rig a full character in Maya without referring to the instructions.

Just my opinion, but if you have a good background with some other graphics package, and you know what you're trying to achieve, then yes. Tutorials are good. With no experience or reference, a book would give a more rounded introduction.
