MadManMike
If the bike was sold faulty, they can get in a LOT of trouble.Imagine if the fault was with the gears, and he fell off as a result and cracked his head open - the LBS would get in a lot of trouble!Kick up a fuss and if they get ratty and refuse to do anything tell them you're off to Trading Standards. They WILL fix it, just be forceful (ie don't say "please may you fix this", say "this bike was assembled incorrectly. Fix it or give me my money back.") pengsmelly
ye i work in my lbs, and when someone has bought a bike of us and brings it back saying something has happened, we just sort it out free of charge, and even tell them if it happens again do this and that. so i would take it back, get him to fix it and tell you what to do if it happens again. matt

Don't go in shooting your mouth off straight away. Just talk to them and 90% of the time they'll just offer to fix it for free, whereas if you're angry they're much less likely to want to help. To be honest I wouldn't mention trading standards unless you actually know what you're talking about, otherwise you'll just look like an idiot. They WILL fix it, just be forceful (ie don't say "please may you fix this", say "this bike was assembled incorrectly. Just go in, explain what happened, and see what he says. Don't be cocky as shit, just say "This was wrong, and this was wrong." If he starts giving you bullshit, THEN start getting all mardy. But yeah, most bikeshops will just sort it out for you. It could be that it just happened to slip through the net or something, and that they rushed it 'cos they had a lot of other bikes to do. Not a great reason, but it can happen. So yeah, just be relaxed about it. Just go in, say what's wrong, ask them if they can help you out sorting it out. As long as it's not messed up 'cos of you, you're golden.
Fishy
Bike shops should be alright. But only be a dick if they start bullshitting.
