Phone Contracts

Right, my brother got a new sony erricsson and a wii on a 18month contract, he has recieved both the wii and the phone so its genuine. Im thinking about doing the same myself, but with a ps3 or xbox 360, but with the higher valued consoles it seems too good to be true. Has anybody else taken out one of these contracts before? and could anybody find me some legit ones? preferably with a good phone (N95 etc). Cheers. :)

Yeah, mobile phones on their own (without a contract) are really expensive - a new one can be upwards of £300 to buy. So the phone companies have offered that other stuff. When you tot up how much you'll pay over the 18 or even 24 month contract, the maths makes sense. Just be careful of those ones where you get cashback ;)

They don't give away things for free. So at the end of the day, you'll end up paying for that console in one way or the other.

very true, but with a contract its making it easier for the person to pay so will have and phone and a contract on an affordable monthly fingy majigy.

but you end up paying ALOT more..

Not all the time...

My dads workmate has a contract on orange, Just had a new phone, pays £30 a month, just got a PS3 with his contract. 18 month contract.

I'm on a 12 month contract, payin £20, an he gets more minutes and text by nearly double! So he might be paying an extra tenner for longer, but gets alot more for it ;)

It's still costing him at least £540 though...

but then i have to say, my phone contracts costing me well over that (like £750 over 18 months, because it was the call plan i wanted(i wont say needed, as its not like id die without a phone, but its like the call plan below it may of just been enough some months, may as well pay the extra £5er a month to make sure ive got enough every month, and i got an n95 free with it in april, but in hindsight. id of been much better off gettin an older phone(say a w810i/k800i/w850i) and a wii/ps3/ipod. as i dont use half the features my top of the range phone has enough to warrant paying for them, but i have bought both an ipod and an xbox360 since then.

dont get me wrong, your still paying for the console.but its not like your buying a console for £540, its more like your gettin a phone contract costing you £5 more per month, or your going for a slightly outdated phone(i dont think having a w810i would make me life any less bearable than my current life with an n95) to get a console

some of them are scams.

The console one is different because if you buy a contract on a sony erriccson and get a free ps3 with it the company that sells you the contract are getting the ps3 at half the retail price. so the phone and the ps3 might cost the company 250-300 but the rest near enough is just profit. So there making nearly half pure profit. it's the same reason that they can give you the phone for free, you might think yeah i'm getting a 200 quid phone for nothing but it's actually only costing the company 30 quid so there not not doing you as much of a favour as you think.

The cash ones are different because you can't get a discount on buying cash so the company aren't making as much profit, they will sometimes give you cash then rely on you going over you monthly allowance occasionally.

personally i think i'm going to get one with a ps3 or xbox360 not yet though because your not getting much for your money just now later this year when i can afford it.

Yeah you might be paying 540 for a year but you have to look at what you're getting for that price, a phone depending on the model can be around 140-200 on paygo or handset only, for minutes and texts and also the console or what ever you get free. Some are worth it i say.

Perhaps, but your minutes and texts (especially texts) will cost virtually nothing to Orange (or whoever). Just because they charge 12p doesn't mean they cost that much. So you can't really equate 'free' texts with contracts to texts on PAYG - Especially when your deal has minutes/texts that you will never use anyway...

Besides, like trials punk said, most people don't need or particularly want a good phone. You can buy phones for £20 which will do the same thing.

It is a truly ridiculous market - a lot of people would save hundreds of pounds a year by using a cheap PAYG phone and topping up every now and again. But people want shiny phones with shit cameras :D (I'm as guilty as the next person by the way, just in case you think I'm preaching).

  • 2 weeks later...

Forgot about this thread LOL! Cheers for the input everyone, just gotta decide what one to get. What good phones are out nowadays, i will be probably getting a deal like 18months with an xbox 360, so if that puts anything into perspective as to what phones i could get? :) thanks.
