Need Some Car Advice!

Hey,

Basically. I should be getting this Clio. After having a look over it today, I've seen these bits are wrong with it :

1) Both Wing mirrors are broken, although they are on the car, they are lose and easily knocked off.

2) The interior seats are worn, and ripped in places

3) The bodywork is scratched in places, mainly stone damage over the car

4) The roof leaks slightly when it rains

5) The radio isn't wired in properly

and

6) Lock on drivers side door in knackered from where someone tried breaking in

finally.

Drivers side door is bent out of place from where they attempted breaking into it.

I should have £300 to spend. I'm reckoning he'll accept that as soon as he gets his new car.

With all the faults, how much do you guys reckon it'll cost to get those bits sorted out ?

As you lot know loads more about cars than I, I'm hoping that you lot can help me out!

If you get to a scrap yard you could proberly get the parts needed for about £250 maybe less.

You could get a much better car for the money by the sounds of things, sounds to me like a bit of a banger!

For £300 you could get something much better!

Please note, this car will only be a runner. It's as a first car basically.

edit : does £200 sound more on the mark of things ?

First runner or not, to get the car running, and foremost, keep it running is going to be a lot of money. Just find a better base car first and you wont have to repair it every week when something else you can't see first hand breaks.

Trust me, shitters are shitters for a reason, spend the little more on a running car, spending money on this one is worthless.

at a guess you could sort it for around 50 quid the first 5 are fairly easy the sixth one is abit dodgy

I sold my 1994 clio a couple of months ago for £200, there were a few scratches but no leaks, only 74k on clock, winfmirrors were fine etc.

so £300 for that sounds a little steep. I looked on parkers before selling and a 1994 clio with 74k on clock and bad condition is only worth £200, so personally for what you've described I wouldn't pay £300 for it.

oh and I sold mine with 8 months tax and 10 months MOT

the one thing I've forgotten to say is that the car only has 70k miles on the clock.

Engine runs really well, and there's no rust around it except a tiny bit around the boot area.

In itself that's probably worth at least £200. To be fair, all those things are kinda cosmetic. As long as it runs OK and doesn't make funny noises and the brakes work, it's probably OK. Depending on your standards, you could fix most problems with gaffa tape And then at least you won't care about the car and you can have lots of fun playing bumper cars in it. To do them all properly (including the body work) would cost way more than the car is worth so I wouldn't bother at all.

The lock might be a bit more tricky, but you can usually get a lock from somewhere (annoying as you'll have to have 2 sets of keys but probably not a big deal really) like a scrappie or a Clio forum. I don't know of any forums, but if you can find one, there are often people breaking cars who will sell the locks for next to nothing. If it's not central locking you can probably do it yourself, though don't trust me on that!

It might not last more than a year though, so depending on your finances/how soon you need it, it might make more sense to save more and spend, say, £600 on something decent.

But then again, you are Hendrixmaster so you probably want a complete POS, right?

It sounds like you're gonna buy this car regardless of what people say. But honestly, look around, view a few cars from different manufacturers, ask about on a few car forums or find a family friend who is a mechanic, then when you've looked at a few and you're sure you've found the best you can for the money - buy a car.

Otherwise you'll just get buyers remorse, which will manifest into extensive faliure sheets come mot time and a very empty feeling wallet - especailly with french cars!
