Cutting Fork

Recommended Posts

Right I ve just for a new frame (Echo lite)

I had a Monty 221pr and the forks on the Monty are longer than the Echo

Which means I ve got to cut it down...easy(The cutting part)

my Forks and stem are from th 221pr, which means i ve got a slopping cap (problem)

Question is Do I cut where the Red line is on the picture

(obviously making sure its all tight and pushed down)

or

a little bit more (1cm) because of the cap

you will want to go a bit lower. 2-3mm i guess. so the headset can be tightened up.

Exactly

It doesn't matter how you cut the tube, ideally the flatter the better. The top cap that comes with the stem provides the slope you need, not the fork steerer.

Just cut it as normal, A little bit below the top of the stem (so none of it comes ontop of the stem) and tighten up as normal

Yes a spacer is a good addition, changing the steerer height can be a big change.

I'd cut it flush or a little bit lower than the stem, and then put the top cap on and check it is all in place and holds properly.

When I changed from my T-Pro frame to my Echo frame, the headtube was a tad shorter and cause more steerer tube to poke through, so when I went to tighten my star nut, it pull the top cap down and butted up against the forks.

Once it done this, I could still tighten the bolt but it wasn't actually getting any tighter as it was as far as the top cap could go.

Bit of filing then sorted this.

But the best way to do it is be conservative, don't cut off too much as you can't go back, but if you cut off too little you can cut off a little more.

EDIT: I also believe that the 08 is exactly the same as the 07, it just has a disc mount rather than a 4 bolt.

So there is only one 08 model and that is disc.
