Danny Kearns
Stripping my frame ?Danny.
Revolver
ahmakes sensei'd use nitromors. cracking stuff, that. If you spread it all over the frame in one go, you can have it done in an hour maybe. If you were going to, say, fill the bath to put your frame in, then i'd put in maybe half a pint/a pint of crystals, at a guessi'd go for nitromors, personally
Danny Kearns
Nitromorse annoys me. Its a pain in the arse. Ive heard with caustic soda. You just stick your frame in, leave it. Pull it out and its fully stripped. If i do it in the bath surely it'l f**k the bath up and my dad'l kill me.Danny.
Mark W
Caustic soda is ri-f**king-diculously powerful, and a bitch to deal with. It's proper shit, you don't f**k around with it. It's way harsher on your frame than nitromors, in that it's what you use to remove anodising whereby it actually takes away the top layer of metal, whereas you just want to remove some laquer/paint.Seriously - just use nitromors. Revolver
hehewell, it depends on what your bath's made of, and how its finishedits definitely your best bet for fitting the frame in though.nitromors for the win Edited December 14, 2007 by Disasterboy
Rusevelt
How do you know how much water to add to the crystals ?And what can i put it in ? Its gotta' be big enough fit a mod frame in.Danny.its visa-versa! you add the crystals to the water (adding water to CRYSTALS is DANGEROUS!). use a bucket of cold water and stir it (with an old plastic brush be sure to wear rubber gloves) smoothly until you get a tornado shaped funnel/whirlpool without too much splashing, then slowly add the crystal like sprinkling salt in food. dont add too fast or it wont dissolve properly. when the water starts to turn whiteish, the fumes become obviously strong when you breathe it in (THIS IS WHEN YOUVE GOT THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF WATER & CRYSTAL MIX). it wont damage the bath tub but it will severly DAMAGE ANY CHROME PLATED parts of bath ie; plug hole ring, taps. so yeah your dad will kill you if you do that. ps, fumes will cause SEVERE IRRITATION BURNS IF YOU BREATH IT IN HARD! imagine your worst sore throat experience but 100times worst. JonMack
To be honest I'd be more tempted to do it bit by bit, by hand, with f**k off thick rubber gloves on and lots of paintbrushes. You need to really watch out too, it strips anodizing in about 10-15 seconds.I just googled strip anodizing with caustic soda, and got this.http://astro.neutral.org/anodise_tips.shtmlI'm sure if you look around you could find information much more useful than any of us can give.http://www.google.com/search?client=safari...-8&oe=UTF-
Gavyn.
it's bloody dangerous stuff it'll ruin an enamel bath and the metal bit that the plug goes into will start to disintegrate, i'd do it with a barrel or something if you can get your hands on one. El Cristoff
Yeah, as said before caustic soda is pretty dangerous stuff, you'd be better of sticking to nitromors to be honest, much safer.

Henrik Y
I've been working a little with caustic soda. It's a strongly ...(English word?) but opposite to acid. You can have it your skin and it doesn't feel at all, and I've been told that if you get it in your eyes it doesn't feel much either and the eyes doesn't tear and it will into the eye the same way as acid but the body doesn't react until it's to late.So be very careful. The most dangerous chemicals is the unexpected ones that doesn't smell and don't seem to do anything.I don't think it's a good idea to have it on the frame because you get in everywhere and if you not get it out or can neutralize it, it will eat out the frame from the inside and it could weaken the welding joints. I think that the professionals have a neutralizing bath too.And when you mix it. Water first then the caustic soda or acid. If you have caustic soda and pour water on it, it will boil at contact and throw it up and around.I would have gone for sandpapers and drill attached steel brush or sand blasting.Edit:If you should get it in your in your face and you not sure if you got it in your eyes don't think it's fine just because you don't feel anything. Wash it with much water and contact a hospital. Edited December 15, 2007 by Henrik Y

Henrik Y
Damn, I never knew it was that powerful! Is it easy to get hold of? I mean, it's pretty dodgy if anyone can just go and buy it!In Sweden you can buy it in a well sorted supermarket. It's used to loosen up hair and other things when the sewer pipes get stuck. I don't know if it's 100% consentrated but on the info it says one spoon/liter.But in a hardware store you should be able to get it and that could be more concentrated then the Kitchen version. It could be different in GB.
spode@thinkbikes
Caustic Soda is pretty powerful. Rob and I made the mistake of adding boiling water rather then cold water (against my advice ). It almost exploded!
Gavyn.
henrik it's the same here and I think the word your looking for in your first post is Alkaline
Fish-Finger-er
yea mike, its proper strong, and fairly easy to buy, places like wilkinsons etc will stock it. used it a couple of times to get alloy seat posts out of steel frames, but it pretty much distroys the seat post. i wouldnt use it danny, my thought is, if a seatpost will go that tight in a frame that it cant be removed with blowtorch, molegrips, hammers, chissels, and a vice, and within a few minutes caustic soda got it loose enough so it would fall in and out, stuff like bb threads, 4 bolt mounts and interference fit areas like the headtube, would be very easy to ruin beyond repair.suggest nitromores or the like, so much easier, so much safer. Will Arnold
use nitromors, but use it properly. dab it on rather than brush it onmakes loads of differencealso leave it on for a good while
Janson
also, caustic soda isn't even that great for stripping paint...
