Internet Etiquette. Just Wrong Or Sadistic?

So, I started thinking about this after reading the topic about Oil (R.I.P), even though most of us only knew him by reading one of his posts every now again, it's amazing how much it sets you back when you read that topic because you feel like you knew him.

I was kind of discussing it with my brother, telling him how weird it was when he told me about this picture.

wow4twiw3.gif

For non WoW players, when I character dies, it drops its money etc, referred to as loot.

Now, me personally, I find this wrong. However, I’m ashamed to admit I find it somewhat funny when looked at at face value until I really thought about its effect on the person who posted the topic, and the rest of the forum.

Then, my bro sent me this video, unrelated to the picture above.

This is an in game funeral for a guy who died in real life. Someone logged on as the character of the guy who died and it was arranged via forums to gather and give him a good sendoff.

However, the funeral was held in a place where battle is allowed. The funeral was ambushed by another group of players.

Youtube Video -> Original Video

From their point of view, they were just playing the game. Using information to know where a group of people would be, ambushed them, and gained whatever it is there was to gain – which I could imagine was a lot as a lot of top players were there.

In hindsight, they should have held the funeral in a place where you cannot fight each other, although I’m sure that no one would have thought this would have ever happened.

Would their actions be compared to that American religious group who protest at soldiers funerals? Or was just good strategy?

I think it goes without saying, their actions were morally, completely wrong. But I put forward the question, how wrong was the actions of the people who raided the in game funeral?

Just inertested in hearing people opinions. :)

I think its because its an internet funeral in a war game... that attacking it is actually very funny...

I think that comment about dropping loot is pretty harsh but at the end of the day, people die and unless you know them.. it doesnt really matter. Sounds incredibly harsh again but before you go hating me realise that its true, its tragic for young people to die but it happens :(

Also, being trials-forum we actually meet up in the real world, Where these guys will never meet so it makes it easier to say/do whatever you like.

Although I dont play Wow, I do play online games and I think personally that is very shallow, selfish and wrong. I mean ffs why couldnt they just give the people who loved and respected him a few minutes to do what they wanted to to help them pay their respects instead of seeing the situation as funny and a chance to gain a few extra levels or whatever. Bet it was a bunch of silly little teenage fat nerds who felt cool for doing it.

It's WOW. That's pretty much goes without saying.

I guess the thing with WOW is that no-one really gives as much of a shit about each other as people on here would. We all meet up (in real life...), develop real connections with people, help people progress (And get helped ourselves), which IS a lot different to fighting against someone in a computer game. I don't know how many people there are who play WOW, but I'm guessing that out of all the people involved in it, there's a high chance that the majority of players neither knew nor cared about that guy dying. As a result, I'm not too surprised that they did what they did.

That "Screenshot or it didn't happen" thing wasn't very funny, nor was it very tactful.

A massive black lady photoshopped over it with "OH NO YOU DI'INT" would've been much better ;)

I am a massive player of WOW to be honest, this is way old and there have been similar occurances in the time between then and now. That post is slightly amusing but is really best kept on other topics than the official rip type topic. In that context it's highly disrespectful.

The funeral thing is pretty stupid though as there is little to gain from pking like that other than a tiny bit of honour (used to buy certain gear) and you can clearly see that it has been organised relatively well so basically the organiser and the atendees are showing that they are total wankers with no sort of idea of feelings ie. the stereotypical WOW player or they were trying to ruin it for some sort of thrill. The comment that only twatish kids play WOW is totally wrong. I'm part of a raiding guild made up of nice people generally over 30 with full time jobs, even have a 59 year old playing. It's true that there lots of dumb ass kids but that statment was a generalisation too far.

An entirely anonymous identity brings about the worst in people. Look at 4chan.

Amen

this sort of thing has been going on for a long time, I've got no hope of finding the link but when I was at uni I remember doing some research on MUDs and early MMPORGs and reading about an instance of in-game rape - this was back in about 1980 so it's not just our generation.

Er, as with all news items they've completely blown 4chan out of proportion.

It's not a group of hackers, its a group of people with common interests, most of them just happen to be quite anti-social or completely not politically correct.

It's also very true that hotmail accounts are often posted along with facebook accounts, or you are given instructions on how to find them.

Also, pretty much every single image that is like a poloroid with a caption underneath it originated at 4chan.

4chan is definitely not for the close minded.

There are much, much worse hidden forums out there though, some of which are really very scary.

Any of you that lurk - I don't - so I'm not breaking rules 1&2.

(I know by saying that, I am - but I don't care to be honest)

My best friend is an oldfag though - so I hear/see about lots of it.

4Chan's a forum, but doesn't have a main subject (like TF). It's like a Chit-Chat - but huge.

So much so - they have sections for each part.

Much of the forum is Ok, apart from the "Random" section - which is like a Chit-Chat, inside a Chit-Chat.

This is /b/.

A great deal of it is illegal, and the rest of it is disgusting (in my opinion).

Any of you that are intrigued, search away - but I'd advise not to get into it.

I don't want to say any more, lest people start disliking me.

If any /b/tards on here don't like this post - PM me, and I'll edit it down.

After all - I don't have any hacker-proof curtains...
