Right after finding out im getting one a friend of mine is after an xbox. He is however wondering if he could link up the 500GB external harddrive he has to a premium to give it a beast of a memory and save money rather than getting an elite?

any idea if its possible?

You definitely won't be able to save things you have downloaded from the Live marketplace to an external harddrive, for a similar ammount of cash you might aswell buy a wireless adaptor (or if he is feeling cheap, a cable) and stream music/video from your PC. Thanks to the latest dashboard update, the 360 can now play virtually any type of video and stream music in-game.
