Thanks for that! I want to move over onto my Linux PC full time for a while, but two things are stopping me.

The modem doesn't work with it, apparently it's a common problem with my modem.

I didn't know how to get most modern games to run on it.

Cheers! Have a badger.

:badger:

Well. If you're modem doesn't work - buy a router. You can get some dirt cheap.

Getting modern games to work is possible, but much like anything Linux that isn't done with a GUI - it might be a challenge.

Your badger will most certainly come in handy - I don't have any food for dinner yet.

I think I might have to get a router, I have this computer in one room and my Linux comp in another (only set up yesterday), I want to get a removable HD and have that plugged into the router as a network drive.

You know when you burn most Linux distros to CD they make a Live CD? Well when I took the disc to college to run it there, it found the network and connected instantly, I posted on here and screenshotted it.

Yeah, that's the beauty of having a router. Pretty much all network cards are supported in most Linux distros. Windows, I will have to download specific drivers for things. I use Fedora and Ubuntu, and both have been awesome on every computer I've put them on, without the need for any extra drivers.

What distro are you using?

Ubuntu 7.10, I'm going to try 7.04 because the instructions for my modem were designed for 7.04.

I just want to have a play really, I have a free spare system, well, not yet, it is mine for the minute but I think my Mum's borrowing it for a while, so ATM it's got XP SP2 on it.

I want to give it a proper run, I may get a router when I get it back, we'll see.

EDIT: I have used Fedora, Mint Linux, DSL-N and Ubuntu. I prefer Ubuntu.

Arkaos Visualiser plug-in for WMP. Nope, sorry.

Doesn't seam to support anything above WMP9 hardly ms's fault.

Vice City, NFSU, GTR1 & 2 and various other games. Nope, sorry.

Have you tried the latest graphics drivers (off nvidia/ati website not windows update)? Google says Vice City works fine with the latest patch ( http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/action/grandthef...ml?mode=patches ) and not looked for the others.

A few other things to, phone connectivity suites and stuff for my Samsung...

Have you tried the Samsung website? Sony Ericsson have fixed their PC Suite for vista.

I have had no problems with vista at all, but then again I'm not a proper hardcore computer user. Aslong as msn, vlc player, iTunes, firefox, wordpad and some games work I'm happy. But it's pretty fast and works good. Prefer it over xp but thats because I like how it works/looks.

yay

Don't upgrade your pc to it though but when you buy a new one get vista.

At the moment basically all games need to be patched to work with it but there are patches for all the decent ones so theres no issue really. I used xp for one night after I got my new pc and it was no faster, vista was infact a fair bit quicker at loading applications. I haven't ever had compatibility issues with the software either there a few little things like you download something and the drivers are made for xp and it won't work but usually if you go to the manufacturers website they have a driver designed for vista.

I think a people get this bad impression of it from complete idiots, my grandma needed a new pc so went to dell (money wasn't an issue) and she decided that she didn't want it because her friends husband had bought it and put it on a computer which originally came with windows 95 and then complained because it was to slow.

anyway it's early days for vista just now and as soon as it gets more popular and things start becoming optimized for vista then it'll be well worth the upgrade

At the end of the day you cant keep backwards compatibility forever i hope 32bit support is dropped in the next windows os (should have been in vista really to force manufacturers to write proper 64bit drivers). Much like apple i bet they wont be supporting powerpc processors for much longer.

Granted there are a few fixes, but why should you have to do all that? I don't wanna be downloading patches for everything - it's a pain in the arse!

Have updated all drivers and stuff, things just don't run right. GTR2 runs awful, looks like a 90's DOS game and is jerky as hell - bizarre as the processor and RAM in my PC is 1/4 of the spec of hers.

Everything is a long route on Vista, even stuff like Add Remove Programs has been moved or renamed - little things like that are just annoying.

The benefits of Vista? A bubble screensaver... woohoo!

XP:

Load disc, install, run.

Vista:

Load disc, install, download patch, try and run, download different patch, run, slow. Adjust settings, looks awful & still runs slow. Give up and go back to XP at my house.

I'm sure there are good points to Vista, but in 6 months I've not seen any.

Why did they do 64bit anyway? Why not go straight onto 128, or 256, or even 512bit?

32 to 64, might not seem like a huge jump, but you have to remember that's 2^32 and 2^64. The difference in the amount of addressable memory is phenomenal - about 17TB IIRC, which is essentially limitless - I don't see us ever having that much system memory in my life time.

+1

Same here :)

I love Vista, had it for ages, everything I have, all my games, peripherals etc installed fine first time. Its good for gaming too, XP doesnt have DX10. If you have a shitty graphics card and not a lot of ram, and a single core processor then Vista may be slower than XP but if you have the PC for it then it seems silly using XP to me. A lot of people will disagree, but Im going off my personal experience, and I use my computer a lot for gaming and video editing and general shit.

If you have a modern computer then yay.

If you have a 4 year old heap of junk ney.

Vista actually runs faster than xp on a pc with 2gb ram. Im interested to hear what all these 'incompatibilities' are because ive certainly not found any and i've been using it since RC1

precisely.

if you want 4gb of Ram and directX 10 you don't have any choice .

I'll be bumping up to vista 64 on my next machine

I hated the thought of vista, I hated using it the first day I got it and couldnt wait to find my XP disk to change it (new latop) but.... and this a big but...

Its actually 10 times better than xp, if not more.

It looks better, works better and has more useful/interesting things!

Most people will say dont get it, bla bla bla, chances are they have left all the security crap on (which is there to please the people that think an unprotected pc will explode within 10 mins of being connected to the internet *waves at the gadget show*)

Customise vista (about 10 mins) to your needs and your onto a winner.

Ignore the xp worshipers vista is superior and i NEVER thought id say that.

oh by the way, this topic is raised EVERY time a new OS is brought out..

Just think back to all the XP compatable issues, Vista WILL become standard. Its just a matter of time.

Microsoft admitted Vista, aka Windows Me Two (Me II), is a joke that no one wants.

proof please :)

I've tried to use the following on the Mrs. PC (Brand new, Vista junk)

Arkaos Visualiser plug-in for WMP. Nope, sorry.

Vice City, NFSU, GTR1 & 2 and various other games. Nope, sorry.

Yet on my 512mb P4 XP system they run brilliantly.

A few other things to, phone connectivity suites and stuff for my Samsung...

It just seems that 90% of the stuff I try and do on it doesn't work.

I hate Vista, and I've been using it on hers for about 6 months.

LONG LIVE XP!

I tried putting a 12" vinyl into a dvd player... didnt work either :(

It's a failure if you desperately want to install it yet don't have a good enough PC. A while back Danny advised me to get more RAM which would apparently speed the system up. Upgraded from 1gb to 3gb and the system instantly became faster than XP. I'd say 2gb is a safe amount that will unleash the full potential of Vista.

I think the greatest thing in this system is (and I'm not joking) the font. It's just so smooth and clear!

Great so £60 spent on extra 2gb of RAM, £70 on Operating System and the best thing about it is the font? You not thought about having XP and using the Vista Transformation pack so you can too have a pretty shiney OS?

Saved yourself about £100 and don't have to worry about Digital Rights Management or Driver issues. Has nobody noticed that you get faster and faster computers to be slowed down by overweight bulky operating systems, fair enough if the OS is actually alot better and beneficial but what's wrong with XP?
