hI-OOPS-CAPS
I have a '95 polo 1litre,as i was coasting along i saw the rev needle drop to zero and it didnt start when tried straight after.after some things were tried,i put petrol in and it fired up straight away.at first i just thought the petrol needle wasnt reading right as it was 1/4 tanklow and behold same happened again, after fillin it up 25£ of petrol, i drove maybe 10miles and bam,my engine cut out for same reason.im not sure if petrol needle is workin correctly, but im pretty sure it is.i cant smell petrol either.any ideas of what the problem is?? Wet Banana
Well it won't be the petrol "needle" as a 95 Polo would be injection. Probably a problem with the injectors or fuel rail.Best bet is to check out some VW Polo forums or failing that call the AA

hI-OOPS-CAPS
when its running, does it drive well? any lack of power?im guessing its only wanting to cut out if you leave it to idle?it runs with normal power, and by needle i mean the needle that indicates the fuel in the tank.it has fuel injectionit cuts out when it isnt in gear, when it idlesjust went back to car with petrol (bearing in mind it fired up straight away when i put petrol in the previous time) and it didnt start.is there any sort of fuel filter? or any place a blockage can occur? Will Arnold
hmmm, might not be a fuel problem atall. could be spark related.although saying that, the fact that there is no loss of power indicated that the fuel and spark are being provided.possibly your idle contol valve is faulty.possibly the wires and connections that connect the idle control valve are faulty! i remember on my vw golf mk3 1.4 (different engine i know) the temp thermostat was locked closed, which meant my engine always was overfuelling, which was ok when driving, but when idling it would bog down with fuel and stall. but i dont reccon this is your problem as you've said you can't smell fuel.hope this helps, let us know how it goes

hI-OOPS-CAPS
i think wills got it right there hm now i dont think its fuel related.both times this problem happens,it started afterwards when its been left alone for about 1hr 30mins or so.before that when i try and crank it up the engine will just turn but wont start.will a faulty idle control valve stop it starting after it cuts out??think im gonna splash out a tenner on a fuel filter and keep my fingers crossed

hI-OOPS-CAPS
contradiction? lolno lack of power suggests nothing wrong with fuel delivery! ah no i meant fuel as in fuel content of the tank. because twice it started when i put fuel in, but those 2 times it had been standing for like 2hrs.when i mean fuel filter, i did ask "or any place a blockage can occur?" because it cant really be much elseits not a vacuum

giantwhore
Scrap all other ideasIf the car is only cutting out when your not in gear and have no revs then it's 99.9% your idle speed control valve. Blocked or broken.Chris

hI-OOPS-CAPS
Totally. Fuel Filter clean too?not sure, bought one, only 7£.seems like a new idle control valve is not too much cash so might be cheaper than expected.is there much labour goes into doing these things?
