Disc Brakes

I'm guessing disc brake technology is constantly getting better so, what's the latest decent ones for a hundred?

That's each by the way, so suggest away...

One's I've looked at so far are Avid Juicy 5 and Magura Louise.

Are there better? What would you suggest? They don't need a trials bite to them, just want ones that'll be good for general street / XC riding :)

Avid Juicy 5's are amazing. Running one on my trials bike at the moment. I hate proper bitey brakes, so this brake is perfect, plenty of hold and modulation.

Also Magura Louise are amazing brakes too. I had the 180 and it was SOOOOO powerful. Gay boy Kennard has it now, I think he loves it.

For a streety bike I would go for the Avid over the Magura.

The're awesome but there way over 100 quid.

2 second hand hopes? Personaly i'm not to keen on the avids. 2 of my friends had them on the front of their trials bikes and they were good for a few months but then they went really poor, they couldn't get them sorted at all, tried new pads, rotor, rebleed and they were still pants.

I think I would go for the safe option with a nice set of deores but if you fancy a bit of a risk fomula b 4's are £40 more than your budget and were bloody good on the xc bike I tryed them on.

Avid disk brakes are stupidly good. Both mechanical and hydraulic.

I have a BB7 on my mod with a 165mm Hope Gothic rotor, and it's so nice!

My friend has the Juicy 5 160mm on his, and it's near enough the same as my BB7.

Such impressive brakes, and the look pretty smart too.

For a non-trials bike, Deore (hydro) is all you'll ever need. Powerful, dirt cheap, indestructible. The more expensive ones (XT, XTR) are basically just a bit lighter, still great but the value for money isn't quite as amazing.

Juicy discs are good too, slightly more bite so better for trials but probably not quite as indestructible as the Shimano ones. I've got a Juicy 7 on the front of my trials bike and I like it. Not quite as bite-y as a BB7 but feels a lot nicer. Although I'm not convinced the 7 is worth the premium over the 5 - they're very similar. Juicy 3s ain't so good though.

My mate's got Magura Louises on his street bike and they seem OK, but the lever feels terrible, lots of sharp edges etc. I know this shouldn't really be enough to put me off (since the power is pretty good) but it is.

I have used 4-5 pairs of Hayes 9s (one on my XC bike for about a year, the rest on other people's bikes) and only one out of 5 has been good. The rest have been really wooden with poor power. They're just about OK on an XC bike but I wouldn't use them for anything else at all.

I dunno what it is with hayes. The ones on my xc bike are absolutly mental, its like tap them and your dead. deffinatly mint brakes though. might be due to the fact i bedded them in going down the steepest hill ever.

Yeah, the one pair (out of the five) that actually worked, worked really well. I just think their quality control is a bit rubbish and I wouldn't risk it.

Hmm, that's thrown a spanner in the works... everyone kind of disagreeing...

So generally Juicy 5's will be fine?

No real votes for the Louise, don't want Magura's (Assuming he meant HS33 Rim brakes), not risking the Hayes and don't have a higher budget.

I just don't like Shimano, even though I know they're good (A mate of mine had a Deore on his bike, it was nuts!).

Based on that I think I'll give the Juicy 5's a shot, unless anyone really disagrees.

Front maggie - £65, cant go wrong!

Harry!

lol

For that you can get a bikehut disc, its the same as the dio-tech one, (I think) and they seem to work okay, I havent really ridden on one properly. In mt experiance hydro disc seem to dislike me! So I've stuck with cable. Avid BB7 203mm and an Avid SD7 lever, really good brake to, mine would be a lot better, I think it needs a new cable and set up correct.

I have a hope mini mono you can have for £20, nees new seals I think
