r2wtrials
I just want to try something... at the moment i have an old Hope disc set-up on the back. But after riding a few v brake set-up bikes i actually preferred them. No main reason but i have found that in my beginner type of way i ride if i relax one little bit of pressure on my lever it slips slightly and this is unnerving for me at my stage of learning!! With the v's i seemed to be able to hop about on the back wheel much more confidently. Now this could all be in the mind but as the mind is what is controlling my riding i will give it the benefit of the doubt!!! Question.... i run an old school set-up... giant frame with a hope hub and mavic 121's. What are the best v's to go for without breaking the bank... and best booster as i know the frame will need it. Also is there much difference in cables? My idea is to go for avid sd7's and say an echo booster... not too expensive so that if i change my mind and go back to the disc i haven't wasted loadsa money. (hence the resaon i haven't mentioned maggies)Any thoughts....
mafu26
i know what you mean about the v brake. locks up quicker and has less modulation which can be good in trials. i was going to say go for a deore v brake at a tenner if your on a budget but if your willing to spend a bit more defo go for the avid sd7. i'd personally spend the money on getting a decent pair of pads rather than a brake booster, you might not even need one. my mate used to have a giant team trials and he ran an sd7 on the back with a grind and no booster and it was very sweet indeed. hope this helps. r2wtrials
Cheers for that... if nothing else the booster may stop me sitting on the arms when i slip off the back again Pads... Heatsinks?
mafu26
yeah heatsinks are the way to go for V if you have a grind. not too sure on the colour though... check that pad review thing at the top of the page.
Elliot
Bigman nearly talked me into going to v's a while ago in a thread, he recommended:Dewhore arms: £10 (CRC)Odessey Linear Slick Cable: £6 (Pijn)SD7 lever: £11 (Tarty)Trials vee pads: From £15 - £22Budget setup Total (Minus adapters, Most expensive pads): £49Booster for above setup: Echo Vee Booster £20 (Tarty)So that setup with booster comes in at £69 (And all new parts!) Ali C
I reccomend rockpad vee pads, the compound is ace and the thread section is heat treated, ( have had some problems with heatsink backings stripping)
Tomm
at the moment i have an old Hope disc set-upThat's your problem. Old Hope discs are pretty rubbish for trials - the only decent one I've ever used is the Hope Trials brake. To be honest what you're describing is just a bad brake with insufficient power, not really anything to do with the nature of disc brakes as such - don't let that put you off discs forever, plenty of people run discs on the rear with no problems, although V-brakes/maguras still seem to be the 'safe' option for the time being. Zordon
I used an Echo vee booster for some time and it was less stiff than my current one which was the cheapest one in my lbs (like 3 pounds or less). The only advantage Echo could have was better tyre clearance. But it was on mod. On stock i believe any booster should fit.
JonMack
Heath, Bens rear vee setup is one of the best you'll get, and it's not even expensive, the biggest cost was the Coust vee pads, at £28 a set from Steve at Heatsink. But like Elliot said, head down to Somerset if you wanna get it in person or get it off Tarty/CRC if you dont mind doing it over the net and get either a set of Deore or SD7 arms, an SD7 lever and a decent cable (go into The Playground on Meadow Street in town for that, I dunno if they have any black cables left but the last time I went in there they had a Blue Odyssey Slik cable in there for about £6, if the guy working in there is quite well spoken, wearing baggy jeans and has dyed black hair, his name is Dave, and he's a really nice guy, just tell him you're after an Odyssey BMX cable, they're at the back of the shop behind the rows of BMXs). Booster wise you're either looking at Echo (£20), or 74Kingz(£39) from Tarty or a cheap Salsa/generic vee booster which you could probs find in Somerset, or ask Ian or Deano if they have something at home! Hope that's of some use to you mate. I'll be sure to bring the bike back down for xmas, we might only get one or two rides in but it will be good to see you! r2wtrials
Hiya Jon... how you doing.Yep rode bens Zoo and it was good. Found avid sd7 levers at about 15 quid for a pair at chain reaction... including free delivery. And ben reckons he has a sd7 set of arms knocking about. I gave him a free nearly new Middleburn rock ring and cog yesterday so i reckon he owes me I have good old mavic 121's that i ground about 4 years ago before i stopped riding, a refresh with the grinder and a bit of tar will do the job for the mo.. long enough to see if i am on the right track. My other main concern about the hopes is that i know i will bugger up the disc in 5 minutes as i am starting from scratch again with my riding!!p.s. last time i saw you, you served me breakfast out of the macdonalds window Edited November 9, 2007 by r2wtrials
r2wtrials
.. a quick thanks to all. You were right, the v set up is so much better than the Hope on the back. So good in fact that it makes the front disc feel shite!!!I got a pair of sd7 levers from Chain reaction for 15 quid and had some shimano diore cheapo arms laying around. Put a nice braided cable kit on and it is awesome even without special pads or a booster. The frame flexes a bit giving a slightly spongy feel so i will be after an Echo unless i get something cheap from ebay!!Now fancy a BB7 for the front so that i can keep the levers the same on both sides... anyone got a cheap one going Edited November 10, 2007 by r2wtrials
