How can he go from buying such a beautiful guitar to such a horrible one? Tell him the strat is amazing, he doesn't need to bother with a Jem, Steve Vai is overrated. How much did he get the strat for tis very nice!?

Exactly what I was thinking! You couldn't pay me to own a Jem.

and why is that ? i think the jem is a brilliant guitar and yes i have played a ibanez handmade one and there incredible speedmetal guitars , the guitar should reflect your playing i mean you cant exactly play trivium on single coil start pickups you need big emg's or something similar .

be more specific? electric, acoustic? bass? baritone?

if it's electric, based on your music tastes, you'll probably be wanting an ibanez or something. don't forget you need an amp too.

Yeh sounds about right, I borrowed a Yamaha Pacifica a few years ago, but it wasn't "metal" enough, if that's the right word.

I had some fun with the pedals though, even blew up the amp!

I think he paid.. £600-690 with the case and everything with it basically brand new.

I'm not a guitarist at all, but I don't really like the sound of the Strat much at all, maybe its his Amp (which he's looking to upgrade as his was only £100-ish) but it sounds too I dunno flutey? like nice sounding I guess, I'd prefer to hear a more metal sounding one but what do I know

He's looking to buy that new one probably for one reason..

His favourite guitarist is John Mayer though but he does like Steve Vai too

Yeah that;ll be it, that srat is a brilliant guitar, it will only be either him or a shity arse amp that will be maing it sound bad.

Shit me, such awful guitar playing, as a guitar player that is the equivelent of TGS style trials - no style or substance, just endless boring repetition.

Yeah, the big strings are a bit smaller than regular guitar strings and tuned normally. The smaller strings are an octave higher except for the last two strings witch are identical (two b and two high e strings at the same octave). You can also opt for "shaped" tunning if playing a song that uses a specific shape throughout the song, say wonderwall by oasis, I like playing it with an e and a b string a step and a half higher (third fret equivalent) or just plain ass weird shit to mess around... The problem with them is that since they have 12-string, they put a lot of tension on the body so they aren't built the same way as other guitars (not really noticeable) and because of that, it's apparently better to keep them tuned a half-step lower (Eb) and also the strings have a tendency to break really easily.

Hahahaha I make it sound like if they're very cumbersome and bitches to work with, well they are to a certain point, but it's really nice when you need it. :P

Last night I played Hells Bells by AC/DC all the way through toi the original song, only missed like 2 notes!

Also learnt to play Sandstorm by Darude, but not fast enough yet.

Meh, I'm shite, but my guitar is horrid, it's a nylon stringed Encore equivilant from about 20 years ago. The tuning knobs bearly work, the neck flexes like mad, you can't play any chords or power chords without the strongs rattling on the frets.

I love my mates Vintage SG copy thing, it's so nice to play.

I miss my old pacifica, I'm want another one. But they aren't really "metal" enough for what I want to play. I think I'm going to attempt to get an Ibanez at some point in the future.

Yes, apparently the pink ones are Dimarzio Paf Pro Pickups, he's also got the stock ones with it too, and yes that bridge makes for some kick ass whammy hammering.
