jacobias
Hi, what do you think I should do to my rims? Grind 'em or tar 'em? Also, where would I get the tar from if I choose to do that? Thanks, sorry its such a basic question. Thanks again,Jacob
Sir_Hops_Alot
Tar is easy to get depending how daring your feeling, me and my bro "borrowed" it from B&Q because its roofing tar and they have shed loads. I don't really know much about a grind though.
jacobias
Ive searched it on google and tar is fine aslong as it doesn't get wet. I will be getting some of that then (when my bike arrives)
Alex-Mitchinson
grind.use the search though, there are loads of topics about this sorta thing.
Ticker
A grind and some decent pads are much better than tar.Which sticks and disscolours your rims also wet weather performance is s**t!!
m2rekkk
both work good i use tar because its easy to usebut i have to put tar on the rim every beginning of the ride so i think grind lasts longer grinding should be better

dreaming of a monty
i've got a medium rim grind on my rear and ive used rock pads as i was told the grind rips normal brake blocks to shreds, got it done by tartybikes and i've never had a problem with it,very strong brakes with plenty of grip recommend it to everyone. Dekes
Use the search, grind is better, always. Only use tar when you need to ride and have no more time for a grind and stay out of the wet with it. [/thread]

eskimo
I'm currently using Plazmatics on a smooth rim with no tar. Tar is actually really good if you use it right, people are just set against it because 'others' said so. I'd say you will get more hold with tar that with a grind. The other points have been mentioned...

max-t
You want an 'on off brake'. A grind does this alot better than tar. The pads stick to the rim which is gay, rarther than being stopped by friction. And tar and smooth rims dont work for shit in any sort of moist conditions. jacobias
How hard is it to grind it yourself? How much is it to send it off to tarty bikes to get it done for you?I realise I should have searched it now. I hadnt read the newbie section. :$ Sorry
eskimo
How hard is it to grind it yourself? How much is it to send it off to tarty bikes to get it done for you?I realise I should have searched it now. I hadnt read the newbie section. :$ SorryI wouldn't worry most people still ask anyway. It's around £3 for a grind and postage i'm not really sure. I would say less than a fiver though. So for £13 you could buy an angle grinder and just try it yourself. You can't really wrong if your carefull. There are a fair few topics about angle grinding techniques and what discs to use. The best thing you can do is practice on an old rim. d_c
I used to ride with a smooth rim and Zoo! pads with tar, and i really liked it!Then when I moved bikes, i decided to get a grind, and i will never go back!Even though i will spend more on rims, I still think it is worth it in the long run, as I have a lot more confidence whilst riding a ground rim!Danny. !Billy_BOY!
I would never pay anyone to grind my wheel! its really easy to just do it yourself, theres some guides in the wiki on how to do it. But i really do prefer grinds, there a lot more reliable, tars sticky and messy, unreliable, goes gash in the wet, can just stick the pads to your rim (which you dont want before a drop or a gap)I find that with a grind you can "feel" your brake a lot more and you know how your brake will feel all the way round the rim, instead of having a massive sticky patch of tar on a patch on your rim. So definatly grinds you'll never go back if you do a good one. Apparently Wilko's do best grinding disks, think its the metal ones?Sometimes put a dabb of tar on my rim halfway through a ride if my brakes playing up, but when i get home it means i have to re-grind it! cant stand tar!
