fathopper Posted September 25, 2007 Report Share Posted September 25, 2007 Im not sure on what car/van to get as a first car, ideally id like to get vw caddy pick up, because theyd be good for hauling bikes and car bits around, just general runaround. Bad side is only 2 seats Or just a normal car really I dunno maybe a vw again of some sort but not an estate as I just dont like them. What do you lot reckon? fathopper Posted September 26, 2007 Author Report Share Posted September 26, 2007 Looks like I am going to get the caddy now, just went up the local bike shop and aparently there are quite a few options open to strap a bike down in a pick up so would be awsome for a carrying bikes in and other bits and bob for like the jowett. What I'm saying is that a two seater with loads of room in the back would be pretty cool I reckon.I've got a polo and two bikes in the back is quite hard, whereas my GF's Golf takes bike with ease. zoo p Posted September 26, 2007 Report Share Posted September 26, 2007 I have a 1988 Mk1 Caddy and its amazing! you can get a realy good condition one for 800, make sure you have a look at the underside and wings for hidden rust. also there are alot for sale on here www.vwcaddy.comgot mine for 380 and has quite alot of rust, but ive got the time to put into it so its all good!with trials bikes i wouldnt bother with anything to hold them up, just lie them down and bungee strap them in! and they are prety quick for what they are, its basicaly a mk1 golf without all of the weight in the rear, and as its an 8v petrol of a deisil its nice and torquey as well.GET ONE!!!!!!!!!!! Token Posted September 27, 2007 Report Share Posted September 27, 2007 I think replacing a dropped valve is abit of a bitch of a job, the cambelt must of snapped?It involves rebuilding the top end of the engine. fathopper Posted September 27, 2007 Author Report Share Posted September 27, 2007 Depends what type of project car you mean, whether modern car to pimp or an oldie classic, I would definetly recommend it if its an oldie and you have the time and money, Its quite a steep learning curve compared to modern day cars, I'm looking at my caddy and thinking the only thing I reckonise is the coil ignition system. A year and half on now since I started the jowett, and its all just about mechanically sound, its just the paint to finish now and the interior once I get it on the road which hopefully will be soon.
