There are quite a few Tom, I used to use a good one but can't remember what it's called. I'll check LifeHacker see what I can conjure up.

These are quite good.

I used to have to do mine over a network so used to use something different, but those should help. Check the comments too, theres usually useful suggestions there.

Right;

I am fed up with not having any space on my hdd all the time. I've ordered a new samsung spinpoint 250gb hdd for my macbook, and a usb2 case for the one i have on now so i can use it as an external.

What i want to do is, copy EVERYTHING i have on this hdd to the new one when it comes. I want to keep my settings, all my files, apps and most importantly all my shiz in itunes (music and play counts and playlists, album art, etc).

How and with what methods and software do i do this?

(old hdd is 60 and new 250gb so no space problems.)

Use disk utility on your computer :) It's easy:

  1. Connet your external hard drive
  2. Open Disk Utility (Apps/Utilities)
  3. Select your internal hard drive from the left
  4. Click the 'restore' tab
  5. Select your internal hard drive from the left
  6. Drag your internal hard drive to the source option
  7. Drag your external hard drive to the "destination" area
  8. Check the erase destination before install box
  9. Hit restore and wait :)

Voila.

Edit: Looks like this

just wondering..

why are apple so keen to launch a high number of products in a short space of time?

new imac. new ipods. iphone. leopard. macbook air

anyone know why they are doing it so quickly?

usually people hold releases according to markets eg gaming, but apple seem to be churning out loads of stuff. admittedly new products sometimes.

more and more mac users though.. but have the percentages changed from pc to mac much? or is the increased shared with pc?

not that i know. maybe some people do.

Firstly 'cos Apple are a business. They want new revenue streams all the time. Secondly, technology moves at a stupidly fast rate meaning new product updates for speed bumps and such should be done every few weeks if possible.

Glad Jon sorted it. Make sure you do an 'Archive and Install' rather than an update for your computer up to Leopard.

More info here. We've been having tonnes of problems with just drop-in disk updates to Leopard, including my computer.

now i'm confused. i will be doing my swap according to this:

1. put new hdd in USB chassi

2. mount leopard dvd

3. install leopard on the external

4. at the end of the installation (apparently) it will ask if i wanna copy stuff from another hdd or mac (is this true on leopard?)

5. i will choose to copy all my data from my internal drive to the new one

6. i will fit the new hdd in the macbook and put the old one in the USB chassis

where does the 'archive and install' thing come in play?
