MadManMike
Right,Run my own business as Sole Trader, but looking for bar work in the evenings to boost income. How can you be Sole Trader AND Employed? Can I invoice the bar and stay a Sole Trader or can I register as Employed and Sole Trader? The stuff on gov. websites seems a little confusing - I wonder if anyone else is doing the same? UrbanPoet
You can, of course, be self-employed and employed. The main question would probably be of tax; you'll pay income tax on the profits of your business and pay tax on your income from the bar. I think that both will have to be done by filling in a Self-Employed Self Assessment Tax Return at the end of the tax year. Your best bet is to phone HMRC, CAB or talk to an accountant. As for registering as both S/E and employed, I'm pretty sure there was a question on current (and continuing) employment on the form to register as S/E. I can't remember, I did mine about a year ago!
